Are Peptides the Same as GLP-1? Peptides vs GLP-1 Medications Explained

This page explains what a peptide is, where GLP-1 medications sit inside that family, how the evidence differs, which products sold as "peptides for weight loss" are not GLP-1s, and how they are prescribed.

Semaglutide (Injectable)
Semaglutide$99/mo

Not quite: every GLP-1 medication is a peptide, but most peptides are not GLP-1s. GLP-1 is a 30-amino-acid peptide hormone from the gut, and semaglutide and tirzepatide are engineered peptide versions of it that act on the GLP-1 receptor. "Peptides" is the much wider chemical family of short amino-acid chains, which also includes insulin, oxytocin, BPC-157, GHK-Cu and growth-hormone-releasing peptides, and most of those act on entirely different systems with far thinner human evidence. So "peptides" and "GLP-1" overlap, but they are not the same thing. Pepti prescribes compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide alongside many other peptides, and compounded medications are not FDA approved.

The short answer

Question Answer
Is GLP-1 a peptide? Yes. Glucagon-like peptide-1 is a 30-amino-acid peptide hormone
Are semaglutide and tirzepatide peptides? Yes. Semaglutide is a 31-amino-acid analogue of GLP-1; tirzepatide is a 39-amino-acid peptide acting on GIP and GLP-1 receptors
Is every peptide a GLP-1? No. Most peptides act on other receptors and systems
Do other peptides work like a GLP-1? No. None of the non-GLP-1 products on this site acts on the GLP-1 receptor
GLP-1 medications Pepti prescribes Semaglutide, from $99/mo, and tirzepatide, from $159/mo
Are they FDA approved? The active ingredients are; compounded preparations are not

GLP-1 prices are "from" prices because the vials are dose-specific and the price moves with the strength. Every Pepti price is all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping, with no separate membership fee.

What a peptide is

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the building blocks of protein, joined by peptide bonds. Link a few dozen together and you have a peptide; link hundreds and you have a protein. The FDA's working definition treats a chain of 40 or fewer amino acids as a peptide. That is a description of chemistry, not of what a molecule does: the word tells you its shape, not its purpose. The full explanation is in what are peptides.

Your body makes thousands of peptides, and many of them act as signals. A few examples show how varied the family is:

Peptide Length What it does
GLP-1 30 amino acids Gut hormone released after a meal; insulin release, slower stomach emptying, fullness
Insulin 51 amino acids in two chains Tells cells to take up glucose
Oxytocin 9 amino acids Uterine contraction, milk let-down, social bonding signals
Growth-hormone-releasing hormone 44 amino acids Tells the pituitary to release a pulse of growth hormone
GHK 3 amino acids, carried with copper as GHK-Cu Found in plasma; studied around collagen and skin repair
Thymosin beta-4 Parent of TB-500 Binds actin inside cells; studied around cell movement and repair

GLP-1 is one member of this family. BPC-157 and semaglutide are both peptides and have no more in common pharmacologically than aspirin and insulin.

Where GLP-1 medications sit in the family

  • The hormone

GLP-1 is released by cells in the lining of the small intestine within minutes of a meal. It tells the pancreas to release insulin only when glucose is high, lowers glucagon, slows stomach emptying, and acts on receptors in the hypothalamus and brainstem that register fullness. The natural hormone is destroyed by the enzyme DPP-4 within about two minutes, which is why a drug version has to be engineered rather than simply injected.

  • The medications

Semaglutide keeps most of the GLP-1 sequence, swaps one amino acid to block DPP-4, changes one other, and adds a fatty-acid chain that binds it to albumin in the blood. The result is a half-life of about a week. Tirzepatide is built on the backbone of GIP, the other incretin hormone, and engineered to activate both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, with a half-life of about five days. Both are injected once a week. These modifications, lipidation and unnatural amino acids among them, are the standard tools that turned peptides into a mainstream drug class. The background on the hormone is in what is a GLP-1.

  • Why the GLP-1s stand apart

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are the most studied peptides in medicine. They are the only peptides on this site with large randomised trials for the use they are prescribed for: the STEP, SUSTAIN and SELECT programmes for semaglutide, and the SURMOUNT and SURPASS programmes for tirzepatide. Most other peptides prescribed in this field rest on animal and cell research plus prescriber experience.

Peptides vs GLP-1, head to head

GLP-1 medications Most other prescribed peptides
Examples Semaglutide, tirzepatide BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu, sermorelin, CJC-1295 / ipamorelin, MOTS-c, Semax, Selank
Target GLP-1 receptor (and GIP receptor, for tirzepatide) Varies: growth-hormone axis, tissue repair, skin, cognition, metabolism
Acts on appetite? Yes, the main mechanism Generally no
Human evidence Large randomised trials, approved products Mostly animal and cell work; few or no randomised human trials
FDA position of the active ingredient Approved active ingredients Most were nominated for the 503A bulks list and sit under interim policy; a few, such as tesamorelin, are approved active ingredients
Is the compounded vial FDA approved? No No
Schedule at Pepti Once weekly Commonly once daily on weekdays, or as directed

The question behind the question

People often ask "are peptides the same as GLP-1?" because they have seen "peptides" marketed for weight loss and want to know whether those are cheaper versions of semaglutide. They are not. Several products in that space are not GLP-1s and do not act on appetite the way a GLP-1 does; a few are not peptides at all.

Products sold for weight that are not GLP-1s

Product Is it a peptide? What it acts on instead Price at Pepti
Tesamorelin Yes The growth-hormone axis; studied for visceral fat $249/mo
AOD-9604 Yes, a fragment of growth hormone (amino acids 177 to 191) No appetite or incretin action $229/mo
MOTS-c Yes, a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA Described around muscle fuel handling $259/mo
5-Amino-1MQ No, a small synthetic molecule An enzyme (NNMT) inside fat cells $219/mo
SLU-PP-332 No, a small synthetic molecule Estrogen-related receptors that control mitochondrial genes $229/mo
L-Carnitine No, a small transport molecule The mitochondrial fatty-acid shuttle $219/mo

None of them is a substitute for a GLP-1 medication, and none has human trial evidence comparable to semaglutide or tirzepatide. Some are prescribed alongside a GLP-1 for a different job, which is covered in what peptides can you take with tirzepatide. More detail is in is 5-Amino-1MQ a peptide, L-carnitine vs GLP-1 and tesamorelin vs semaglutide.

Can you take peptides with a GLP-1?

Often, yes, under a physician's directions. Because most other peptides act on different systems, they are sometimes prescribed alongside a GLP-1 for a separate goal. Three rules apply:

Question Answer
Same syringe? No. Each vial's directions are calculated against that vial's concentration; never mix two vials in one syringe
Two GLP-1 medications together? Never. Semaglutide and tirzepatide both act at the GLP-1 receptor
Start everything at once? Starting on different dates makes it easier to tell which one caused any change, especially in the early weeks of a GLP-1

List everything you take on the intake. Your physician sets your directions for each product after reviewing it. The general rules are in can you take two peptides together.

Where each stands with the FDA

Because approved versions exist, compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are governed differently from most peptides.

GLP-1 medications Most other peptides on this site
How a 503A pharmacy may compound it As a component of an FDA-approved drug, where the prescriber documents a significant difference for that patient From a bulk substance nominated for the 503A bulks list, under the FDA's interim policy, or from a USP monograph
Shortage history Semaglutide shortage resolved 21 February 2025; tirzepatide resolved 19 December 2024 Not applicable
2026 actions 30 April 2026 proposal to exclude semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide from the 503B bulks list Twelve peptides removed from Category 2 in April 2026; advisory committee votes in July 2026 on several
Is the compounded vial FDA approved? No No

The April 2026 GLP-1 proposal concerns 503B outsourcing facilities that compound in bulk; it does not by itself change the 503A framework under which a pharmacy compounds for a named patient. Compounded medications are not FDA approved, whichever pathway they use. Are peptides FDA approved and are peptides legal in the US keep this current.

How GLP-1s and other peptides are supplied at Pepti

Product type Vial Schedule
Semaglutide Dose-specific vials; the starting strength is 1 mg in 1 mL, drawn at 0.25 mL (25 units) Once weekly
Tirzepatide Dose-specific 2 mL vials; every strength is drawn at 0.50 mL (50 units) Once weekly
A typical repair or growth-hormone-axis peptide, such as tesamorelin 5 mL multi-dose vial, 2 mg/mL (10 mg) 0.25 mL (25 units) Monday through Friday at bedtime

Every vial is sized for about four weeks at the printed directions, so refills run every 28 days, one vial per fill. Injectables ship refrigerated with ice packs, sterile syringes and alcohol prep pads, and your directions are printed on the vial. How each vial is counted is in how long does a peptide vial last.

Side effects differ by what the peptide does

Because "peptides" is not one thing, there is no single side-effect list. The GLP-1 medications have a well-characterised profile from their trials: mainly nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation, especially after dose increases, with pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and dehydration as less common but important risks, and a contraindication in anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Most other peptides have no randomised human safety trials, so what is known is a short list of reported effects, commonly injection-site redness or soreness, and a short list is not proof of a short reality. Peptide side effects: what to watch for goes through them.

What the evidence shows, honestly

The GLP-1 medications are peptides with an evidence base most medicines would envy: large randomised trials in obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and liver disease, run on the manufacturers' products. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide share the active ingredient, not the trials. Most other peptides marketed in the same breath are supported by mechanism and animal work, and some products sold as "peptides for weight loss" are not peptides at all. Anyone presenting a non-GLP-1 peptide as a "natural GLP-1" or as working the same way is overstating what exists. The broader comparison is in best peptides for weight loss.

Where to get a GLP-1 or another peptide prescribed

Prescription peptides cannot be bought legitimately without a prescription. Vials sold "for research use only" are not accountable for identity, purity, sterility or concentration. The prescription route:

  1. Complete a free online intake covering your history, medications and what you want help with.
  2. A physician licensed in your state reviews it, usually within 24 hours.
  3. If it is appropriate, a PCAB-accredited, FDA-registered US 503A pharmacy compounds it to that prescription. Lot test results are published at /quality/lab-results.
  4. It ships refrigerated with your directions printed on the vial.
  5. Your physician stays reachable for questions and dose changes.
