Sermorelin for Women: What the One Sex-Specific Trial Found
This page covers what sermorelin is, what research has and has not looked at in women, how it relates to sleep and the menopause transition, the considerations that change for women, and how Pepti supplies it. For the general evidence, see sermorelin benefits; for the full reference, what is sermorelin.

The one sermorelin-class trial that reported results for women separately was a 1997 randomized, placebo-controlled study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism: ten women and nine men aged 55 to 71 injected a GHRH(1-29) analogue nightly for 16 weeks, and growth hormone, IGF-1 and skin thickness rose in both sexes, while the increases in lean mass and insulin sensitivity were seen in men only. The investigators called for more work on that difference, and none has been done. Sermorelin is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is not hormone therapy, and its use for sleep and recovery rests on the mechanism and prescriber reports rather than trial outcomes. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA approved.

Sermorelin for Women
The short answer
| Question | What the live research shows | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Does it raise growth hormone in women? | Yes; nocturnal growth hormone rose in both sexes in the 1997 trial | Human, small |
| Does it raise IGF-1 in women? | IGF-1 rose within two weeks, stayed up for twelve, then drifted back toward baseline by sixteen | Human, small |
| Skin thickness | Increased in both women and men | Single small trial |
| Lean mass | Increased in men, not women | Single small trial |
| Insulin sensitivity | Rose in men, not women; fasting glucose and insulin unchanged | Single small trial |
| Sleep | Sleep quality was unchanged in that trial; a review found a short-acting GHRH did not improve measured sleep | Reported by patients, not demonstrated |
| Menopause symptoms | Not studied; sermorelin is not hormone therapy | None |
| Pregnancy or breastfeeding | Not used; safety data is absent | Clear exclusion |
The short version: the hormonal effect appears in women; the body-composition changes in that trial did not.

What sermorelin is, in one paragraph
Sermorelin is the first 29 of the 44 amino acids of growth-hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), the signal the hypothalamus sends to the pituitary. It binds the GHRH receptor on the cells that make growth hormone and triggers release of what they have stored, in a pulse, with the body's feedback controls, somatostatin and IGF-1, still working. It contains no growth hormone, is not a steroid, and does not act on estrogen, progesterone or the ovarian axis. It was once the active ingredient of an FDA-approved drug for children, discontinued in 2008 for commercial reasons; in 2013 the FDA determined the withdrawal was not for safety or effectiveness reasons.

What research has looked at in women
The 1997 UC San Diego trial
This is the most detailed adult trial and the only one in the live research that reported women and men separately. Ten women and nine men aged 55 to 71 self-injected placebo nightly for four weeks, then a norleucine-substituted GHRH(1-29) analogue, a closely related molecule, nightly for sixteen weeks.
Outcome Women Men Nocturnal growth hormone Rose Rose IGF-1 Rose Rose Skin thickness Increased Increased Lean body mass Not reported as increased Increased Insulin sensitivity Not reported as increased Rose Fasting glucose and insulin Unaltered Unaltered Blood pressure and weight No change No change IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 rose within two weeks, stayed elevated for twelve, then drifted toward baseline by sixteen. Sleep quality was unchanged. The only adverse effect recorded was a transient lipid rise that resolved by the end of the study.
What it shows. That a GHRH analogue prompts the growth hormone axis in older women as well as men, and that skin thickness changed in both.
What it does not show. That the lean-mass or insulin-sensitivity changes happen in women; in this trial they did not. Nineteen people is a small trial, and nobody has followed up the sex difference. Nothing measured how skin looked.
The other adult trials
The rest of the adult evidence was in men or did not report women separately. A 1992 National Institute on Aging study gave healthy older men GHRH(1-29) twice daily and reported IGF-1 rising into the young-adult range only at the higher dose. A 1997 Johns Hopkins trial in eleven men aged 64 to 76 found nocturnal growth hormone rose but IGF-1 did not with single nightly injections. A 2006 trial in Neurobiology of Aging reported that six months of daily GHRH in 89 healthy adults around age 68 was associated with better scores on several cognitive measures; it is one trial, not repeated with sermorelin itself.
What the difference means
The growth hormone axis does not respond identically in women. That is one reason a physician may prefer sermorelin or CJC-1295 / Ipamorelin to a sleep-focused blend when sleep is not the main complaint, and it is a reason not to assume that results reported mainly in men apply to women.

Sleep and the menopause transition
Why bedtime dosing
The largest natural growth hormone pulse of the day arrives in slow-wave sleep, and a 2000 paper in JAMA described slow-wave sleep and that pulse declining together across adult life, in healthy men. Sermorelin is dosed at bedtime to add to that pulse. That is the mechanistic rationale, not a trial result: a 2003 review in Endocrine notes that a short-acting GHRH did not improve measured sleep under trial conditions, and in the 1997 trial sleep quality was unchanged. Many people report sleep feeling deeper; that is a report, not a demonstrated outcome.
The 3am waking
Waking at 3am is common in perimenopause and after. Night sweats wake people directly, falling progesterone removes a mildly sedating hormone, slow-wave sleep declines with age, and sleep apnea becomes more common after menopause and can present as insomnia rather than snoring. Which of those is driving the waking determines whether a peptide is even the right category of answer. If night sweats are the waker, that is the hormone conversation, not a growth hormone one. Pepti does not prescribe menopausal hormone therapy.
What sermorelin does not do in menopause
It does not treat hot flashes, night sweats, genitourinary symptoms or bone loss, and it does not replace estrogen. More in peptides for menopause and peptides for women. If sleep is the whole point, DSIP is aimed at it more directly, and peptides for sleep covers the options.

What changes for women
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Sermorelin is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding: there is no safety data, the trials excluded these groups, and there is no clinical reason to accept the uncertainty. There is no human lactation data for sermorelin. Tesamorelin, the one GHRH analogue with an approved label today, is contraindicated in pregnancy, and where one member of a class carries that contraindication, the reading for the rest is not "the others are fine." If you become pregnant on treatment, stop and contact your physician the same day. See can you take peptides while pregnant.
Trying to conceive
Human fertility outcome data for sermorelin is absent. Growth hormone and IGF-1 signalling interact with reproductive endocrinology, which is a reason for caution rather than a measured effect in either direction. Tell your physician if you are trying. See do peptides affect fertility.
Cancer history, including breast cancer
Sermorelin raises growth hormone and IGF-1. No study has shown it causes cancer in humans, though long-term cancer-incidence data for the class do not exist. Growth signalling is avoided with active cancer, and a history, including breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer, is a conversation with your physician and often your oncologist before anything starts.
Blood sugar
Growth hormone reduces insulin sensitivity. In the published sermorelin trials fasting glucose was unchanged, but insulin sensitivity tends to worsen through the menopausal transition anyway, so diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance needs discussing at intake.
The cycle and contraception
Sermorelin acts on the growth hormone axis, not the ovarian axis, and no trial has looked at cycle effects in women. Report any cycle change; it is more likely to be the transition than the peptide, but it should be looked at.

What the evidence does not establish
- That sermorelin changes lean mass, insulin sensitivity or weight in women. In the one trial that reported women separately, it did not change lean mass or insulin sensitivity.
- That it improves sleep. Measured sleep did not improve in trial conditions.
- Any effect on menopause symptoms, bone or hormones.
- Any trial in women under about 55.
- Long-term outcome or safety data over years of adult use.

Side effects
Sermorelin has a documented side-effect profile from its approved-drug years and from the trials above. Nothing in the live research suggests it differs for women.
| How often | What is reported | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Injection-site redness, itching, a small lump | Rotate sites |
| Common | Flushing or warmth shortly after a dose | Usually settles; report it if marked |
| Common | Vivid dreams, especially with evening dosing | Report it; timing can be adjusted by your care team |
| Common | Headache in the first weeks | Report it if it persists |
| Uncommon | Fluid retention, puffy hands or ankles, joint aches, stiffness on waking | Report it; it usually means the dose is above what you need |
| Uncommon | Tingling or numbness in the hands | Report it the same day |
| Stop and get help | Facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, breathing difficulty | Call 911, then tell your physician |
| Stop and call | Severe persistent headache, vision change, fainting | Same-day contact |
The middle rows are the recognized pattern of growth hormone above your requirement. The right response is a message to your care team, not pushing through and not changing the dose yourself. The fuller picture is in is sermorelin safe. The 2026 WADA Prohibited List names sermorelin under S2.2.4, prohibited at all times, so it is off limits to women in tested sport.

Where sermorelin stands with the FDA
Sermorelin is not in any category of the FDA's 503A nominations list. It was formerly the active ingredient of an approved product, approved in 1990 and 1997 for use in children and discontinued in 2008 for commercial reasons. No approved sermorelin product is on the US market today. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA approved.

How Pepti supplies sermorelin
| Product | What is in it | Typical directions | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sermorelin | 5 mL multi-dose vial, 2 mg/mL (10 mg sermorelin) | 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously Monday through Friday nights | $229/mo |
| Ipamorelin + Sermorelin | 5 mL vial, 10 mg ipamorelin and 10 mg sermorelin | 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously Monday through Friday nights at bedtime | $219/mo |
| CJC-1295 / Ipamorelin | 5 mL vial, 6 mg CJC-1295 and 12 mg ipamorelin | Printed on your vial | $239/mo |
On the sermorelin vial, each 0.25 mL dose delivers 0.5 mg, and the vial holds 20 doses, about four weeks of weekday-night dosing, which is why refills run every 28 days, one vial per fill. Your physician sets your directions after reviewing your intake, and they are printed on the vial. The dosing detail is in sermorelin dosage.
Every price is all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping, with no membership fee. Pepti is cash-pay and does not bill insurance. Vials arrive ready to use with sterile syringes and alcohol prep pads, shipped refrigerated with ice packs. Lot test results are at /quality/lab-results.

Common questions
Sermorelin for Women, answered.
In the one trial that reported women separately, growth hormone, IGF-1 and skin thickness rose in women as well as men. The lean-mass and insulin-sensitivity changes were seen in men only. It was a 16-week trial in nineteen people aged 55 to 71.
The research describes a rise in your own growth hormone and IGF-1, and in one small trial thicker skin. Sleep, recovery and energy are reported by patients but have not been measured as trial outcomes, in women or men.
It has not been studied for any menopause symptom. It is not hormone therapy and does not treat hot flashes, night sweats or bone loss. It is sometimes prescribed for sleep that is no longer restorative, once night sweats, sleep apnea and the transition itself have been discussed.
It is not a weight-loss medication. In the trial that reported women separately, weight did not change and lean mass rose in men only. For weight on the scale, the GLP-1 medications have the trial evidence.
Many people report deeper sleep, and the dose is given at bedtime for that reason. Under trial conditions, a short-acting GHRH did not improve measured sleep, and sleep quality was unchanged in the 1997 trial.
It acts on the growth hormone axis, not the ovarian axis, and no trial has looked at cycle effects. Report any change to your physician.
No. It is not used in either situation; there is no safety data and the trials excluded these groups.
No interaction has been described, but no study has tested either combination. List both on your intake and tell whoever manages your hormone therapy what you are adding.
Most commonly injection-site reactions, flushing, vivid dreams and headache. Less commonly fluid retention, joint aches and tingling hands, which usually mean the dose is higher than needed and should be reported to your care team.
No trial has compared them in women. Sermorelin has the one GHRH-analogue trial that reported women separately; tesamorelin has the visceral-fat trials. See tesamorelin for women.
At Pepti, sermorelin is $229 a month and Ipamorelin + Sermorelin is $219 a month, all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping.
No. Bloodwork is not required for any Pepti treatment. If your physician wants labs for your care, they'll ask through your account. The free assessment goes to a physician licensed in your state. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription.
