Selank vs Dihexa: Calm vs Recall, Evidence, FDA Status, Dosing and Cost
This page explains each on its own terms, puts them side by side, covers what the research does and does not show, where each stands with the FDA, how each is dosed, what each costs at Pepti, and who tends to suit which.

Treatments mentioned
Selank and Dihexa both sit in the cognitive category, but they are aimed at different problems: Selank is a seven-amino-acid fragment of tuftsin described around GABA signalling and calm, while Dihexa is a modified angiotensin IV fragment built around learning and recall. Selank has small Russian clinical trials in anxiety that compared it with benzodiazepines; Dihexa has promising rodent work, a retracted mechanism and no human data at all. Selank is usually the choice when stress or anxiety is getting in the way of thinking; Dihexa when the specific goal is memory and the reader accepts the unknowns. Both are prescription-only, compounded by a licensed US pharmacy, and neither is FDA approved.

Selank vs Dihexa
Selank on its own terms
What it is
Selank is a heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four amino acids are tuftsin, a natural fragment of the immunoglobulin G antibody molecule; the last three, Pro-Gly-Pro, were added to slow its breakdown. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Moscow, and it is registered in Russia as a prescription medicine in a nasal form. It is not a benzodiazepine, not a stimulant and not a hormone. The full reference is at what is Selank.
How Selank is described to work
- GABA-A receptors. A 2018 cell-membrane study in Protein and Peptide Letters reported that Selank changed how GABA itself bound to its receptor, in the manner of a positive allosteric modulator, at sites partly overlapping with diazepam's.
- Enkephalins. A 2001 paper reported Selank inhibited the enzymes that break down leu-enkephalin, one of the body's own calming opioid peptides, in human plasma. The 2008 clinical trial measured the same marker in patients, so this is the one mechanism with a human correlate.
- BDNF. Rat studies in 2008 and 2019 described changes in hippocampal BDNF, the growth factor tied to plasticity, which is the source of the "nootropic" label.
- Gene expression. A 2016 rat study reported changes in 45 of 84 neurotransmission genes, and a 2017 cell study suggested Selank modifies GABA's effect rather than acting alone.
What human data exists for Selank
There are controlled human trials of Selank: Russian, small, compared against an active benzodiazepine rather than placebo, and not described as randomized or blinded.
Study Who What was reported 2008, Korsakov Journal 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder or neurasthenia; Selank vs medazepam Similar anxiolytic effect, with Selank also described as anti-fatigue and mildly activating 2014, same journal 60 patients with anxiety-phobic and somatoform disorders; Selank vs phenazepam Pronounced anxiolytic effect, mild nootropic effect, persisting about a week after the last dose 2015, same journal 70 patients; phenazepam alone vs phenazepam plus Selank The combination reduced the benzodiazepine's side effects, including sedation and memory impairment None was placebo-controlled, and none has been replicated outside Russia. A 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology characterized Selank as poorly studied outside its country of origin. All of the trials used the nasal route. More is in Selank benefits.
Selank vs Dihexa
Dihexa on its own terms
What it is
Dihexa is a very small modified peptide built from a fragment of angiotensin IV, a breakdown product of the blood-pressure hormone angiotensin II. A group at Washington State University led by Joseph Harding and John Wright found angiotensin IV relatives improved memory-task performance in rats, then built a version that would survive in the body and cross into the brain. Its chemical name is N-hexanoic-Tyr-Ile-(6)-aminohexanoic amide; pharmacies label it dihexa acetate, and it is also called PNB-0408. It is not a stimulant and does not act on dopamine the way attention medicines do. The full reference is at what is Dihexa.
How Dihexa is described to work
- The angiotensin IV signal. A 2018 systematic review in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews concluded that angiotensin IV and related fragments improve learning in animals consistently across models.
- The HGF and c-Met proposal. The developers proposed that Dihexa makes hepatocyte growth factor a stronger activator of its receptor, c-Met, driving new synaptic connections. The two laboratory papers making that case (2012 and 2014) were retracted in April 2025 after expressions of concern in 2021.
- PI3K/Akt signalling. An independent 2021 mouse study in Brain Sciences, in a strain bred to develop Alzheimer's-type deficits, reported better memory-task performance with increased PI3K/Akt signalling.
What human data exists for Dihexa
None. There are no randomized trials, no open-label trials and no published case series. The FDA states it has not identified any human exposure data for dihexa acetate by any route. The 2013 paper that introduced the compound carries a 2021 expression of concern. More is in Dihexa benefits.

Calm versus recall
People sometimes ask which is the "stronger nootropic." The question does not fit. Selank is described as taking the edge off: lowering anxiety and stress reactivity so that concentration is easier. Its "mild nootropic" effect in the Russian trials was measured on attention and verbal-fluency tests in anxious patients. Dihexa is described as acting on memory formation itself, but only in rodents. No study has measured both, and neither has been tested for cognition in healthy adults.
The evidence gap is large
Selank's evidence has real limits: small trials, no placebo, one country, the nasal route. But it is human evidence on validated anxiety scales, compared against established drugs, with a formal side-effect scale. Dihexa has an interesting animal story, fewer independent labs, a retracted mechanism and nothing in people. That gap matters more than any difference in mechanism.
Selank vs Dihexa
Who suits which
Selank first
Selank is the usual starting point when stress, rumination or anxiety sits behind poor concentration. It is not sedating in the Russian trials, has a longer human record, and combines into several Pepti blends, including with its sibling Semax for people who want focus and calm together. See Selank vs Semax for that comparison.
Dihexa
Dihexa suits a narrower group: people with a specific, checkable memory goal, such as learning new material or remembering names, who understand that the human evidence is blank and the mechanism is contested. A personal history of cancer usually rules it out.
Can you take Selank and Dihexa together?
They act on different systems, and nothing in the literature describes an interaction, but no study has tested the combination. That would mean two sets of unknowns at once, and starting with one makes it easier to tell what is doing what. If you want both, say so on the intake; each comes with its own directions printed on its vial.
Selank vs Dihexa
When neither is the right first step
| Situation | What makes more sense |
|---|---|
| New or worsening memory problems you have not had checked | A medical work-up first: thyroid, B12, sleep, mood and medications can all cause it |
| A diagnosed anxiety, panic or mood disorder under treatment | That treatment comes first; Selank is at most an adjunct your prescriber may or may not agree to |
| Focus and mental energy rather than calm or recall | Semax; see Dihexa vs Semax |
| Poor sleep is behind the poor focus | DSIP or the SERENITY Blend |
| ADHD or suspected dementia | Your prescribing physician or a neurologist; neither peptide is a treatment for either |
Selank vs Dihexa
Where each stands with the FDA
Both went into Category 2 in 2023 and both are out of it now, by different routes. As of the FDA pages checked in September 2026:
| Selank | Dihexa | |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Category 2 (29 September 2023), with the generic immunogenicity concern applied to that batch | Category 2, with no human exposure data |
| Removal | 27 September 2024, after the nominator said it had intended to nominate a different substance; now listed as "nominated but withdrawn" | Moved out of Category 2 in the April 2026 revisions |
| Advisory committee | Not reviewed; not on the July 2026 agenda or the meeting announced for early 2027 | Scheduled for a Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting before the end of February 2027 |
| Final FDA determination | No active nomination | Not yet reviewed |
Neither is banned. Both remain legal to prescribe and dispense as compounded medications. Compounded medications are not FDA approved, and neither is an FDA-approved drug. See are peptides FDA approved.
Selank vs Dihexa
Dosing, side by side
Both are injected under the skin into the abdomen or thigh, rotating sites, once a day on weekdays with weekends off. Both vials are multi-dose solutions shipped ready to use, refrigerated with ice packs, with sterile syringes and alcohol prep pads.
| Selank | Dihexa | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical printed directions | Inject 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday | Inject 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday |
| Concentration | 2 mg/mL | 1 mg/mL |
| Per dose (math only) | 0.25 mL x 2 mg/mL = 0.5 mg | 0.25 mL x 1 mg/mL = 0.25 mg |
| Doses per vial | 20 (5 mL divided by 0.25 mL) | 20 (5 mL divided by 0.25 mL) |
| How long a vial lasts | 20 doses at five a week, about 4 weeks | 20 doses at five a week, about 4 weeks |
| Practical note | Do not shake the vial; keep out of light | Morning dosing is usual; some feel over-alert if dosed late |
The draw is identical, but because the vials differ in strength, the same 25 units delivers twice as much Selank as Dihexa. On a U-100 insulin syringe, 1 unit is 0.01 mL; the milligram figures are arithmetic for reading a label, not a way to set a dose. Your physician sets your directions after reviewing your intake, and your directions are printed on the vial. Refills run every 28 days, one vial per fill. More is in Selank dosage.
Selank vs Dihexa
Side effects
Selank. The Russian trials, which used a formal side-effect scale, reported no sedation, memory impairment, dependence or withdrawal over the study periods. With the injection, what gets reported is mostly injection-site redness, mild soreness and occasional bruising. Some people describe early fatigue or a flat feeling, and a few describe feeling wired; both are usually described as settling. Selank has not been studied alongside SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants or antipsychotics. More is in Selank side effects.
Dihexa. There is no human safety data. Prescribers report injection-site redness or soreness, headache, trouble sleeping if dosed late, and a restless or over-alert feeling in the first days. The bigger question is theoretical: its proposed mechanism runs through HGF/c-Met, a growth pathway over-active in many cancers. Nothing has shown Dihexa causes or speeds a tumor, and nothing rules it out. More is in Dihexa side effects.
For both, message your care team about anything unexpected, and about any marked change in mood. Facial or throat swelling, a widespread rash or difficulty breathing is an emergency: call 911 first, then tell your physician.
Selank vs Dihexa
Who should not take either, or should discuss it first
| Situation | Why |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy or breastfeeding | Not used for either; safety data is absent |
| Personal history of cancer | Especially for Dihexa, because of its proposed growth-pathway mechanism |
| Existing psychiatric treatment | Especially for Selank; combinations with most psychiatric medicines have not been studied |
| Tested athletes | Check your sport's current prohibited list before starting either |
Selank vs Dihexa
What the evidence shows, honestly
Neither peptide has a Western-standard, placebo-controlled trial for cognition or anxiety. Selank has small Russian comparator trials in anxiety disorders that reported effects similar to benzodiazepines without their sedation, by the nasal route, from the developing institutions. Dihexa has rodent studies, a retracted mechanism, one supportive independent mouse study and no human data. Any provider claiming either has been shown to sharpen thinking in healthy people is overstating it. What would change the picture is a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of either by injection; none has been published.

Where to get Selank or Dihexa prescribed
Neither can be bought legitimately without a prescription. Sites selling them "for research use only" are not accountable for what is in the vial: identity, purity, sterility and concentration are untested. The prescription route:
- Complete a free online intake covering your history, medications and what you want help with.
- A physician licensed in your state reviews it, usually within 24 hours.
- If it is appropriate, a PCAB-accredited, FDA-registered US 503A compounding pharmacy prepares it to that prescription. Lot test results are published at /quality/lab-results.
- It ships refrigerated with ice packs and your directions printed on the vial.
- Your physician stays reachable for questions and dose changes.
Pepti prescribes both in every state except Oklahoma, plus DC Step by step: how to get Selank prescribed online and how to get Dihexa prescribed online.

Common questions
Selank vs Dihexa, answered.
Selank, when poor focus comes from stress or anxiety; its Russian trials described a mild effect on attention in anxious patients. Dihexa is aimed at memory rather than attention. If mental energy is the goal, Semax is the usual choice. No study has compared Selank and Dihexa.
Dihexa is the one designed around memory formation, but its evidence is entirely in rodents. Selank is described around BDNF in rat studies and around calm in human trials. For memory in healthy adults, neither has trial evidence.
Selank is a tuftsin-based peptide described as modulating GABA and slowing enkephalin breakdown, aimed at anxiety. Dihexa is an angiotensin IV-based compound described around growth-factor signalling in the hippocampus, aimed at learning and recall. Selank has small human trials; Dihexa has none.
Nothing describes an interaction, but no study has tested the combination. Starting with one makes it easier to tell what is doing what. Tell your physician if you are interested in both.
Selank has a human safety record from the Russian trials, which reported no sedation, dependence or withdrawal. Dihexa has no human safety data, and its proposed mechanism raises a theoretical cancer question. Neither has an established interaction list.
No. It is a peptide, though cell-membrane research describes it modulating the same GABA-A receptor family. The Russian trials compared it with benzodiazepines and reported similar anxiolytic effects without their sedation or memory impairment.
No trial gives a timeline for either by injection. The Russian Selank trials measured anxiety scales over a few weeks of nasal dosing. Dihexa has only rodent studies, which do not translate into a human timeline.
At Pepti, Selank is $229 a month and Dihexa is $219 a month, all-in, including medication, physician review, refill management and shipping. Semax + Selank in one vial is $259 a month.
Yes, with a valid prescription, as compounded medications from a licensed US pharmacy. Neither is FDA approved and neither is banned. Selank came off the FDA's Category 2 list in 2024; Dihexa came off in April 2026 and is due for advisory committee review by February 2027.
There is no evidence that either does. Neither has been studied for ADHD, and ADHD treatment belongs with your prescribing physician.
