Selank Benefits: What the Research Actually Shows
This page takes each claimed benefit in turn and says what was studied, in what, and how much weight it can bear. It is organised by benefit, not by molecule; for the biology, the FDA history and the dosing detail in full, read what is Selank.

Treatments mentioned
The benefit most claimed for Selank, calmer, less reactive anxiety without sedation, is the one with human trials behind it, and those trials are small, Russian, and compared Selank with a benzodiazepine rather than with placebo. In 60 to 70 patients per study, the authors reported an anxiolytic effect similar to medazepam or phenazepam, without the sedation and memory effects of those drugs. The focus, memory, BDNF and immune claims come mostly from rat and cell studies. Selank is a compounded prescription injection at Pepti; the trials used the intranasal Russian product, and compounded medications are not FDA approved.

Selank Benefits
The short answer
| Claimed benefit | What the evidence is | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Less anxiety | Human, three Russian comparator trials (2008, 2014, 2015), 60 to 70 patients each | Human, small, active comparator, not placebo-controlled |
| Calm without sedation or memory impairment | Human, the same trials, using a formal side-effect scale | Human, small; reported, not replicated |
| Fewer benzodiazepine side effects when added to one | Human, one trial (2015, 70 patients) | Human, single study |
| Less stress reactivity | Animal (rats and mice, 2002 and 2003) | Preclinical; the response varied by strain |
| Focus, memory, the "nootropic" label | Animal (rats, 2019); a secondary "mild nootropic" observation in anxiety trials | Mostly preclinical |
| GABA-A receptor modulation | Cell (rat brain membranes 2018; rat cortex genes 2016; human cell line 2017) | Mechanism only |
| Slower enkephalin breakdown | Human plasma in vitro (2001); a patient marker in one trial (2008) | Mechanism, with one human correlate |
| BDNF in the hippocampus | Animal (rats, 2008 and 2019) | Preclinical only |
| Immune and cytokine changes | Human blood cells and patients (2008) | Marker changes only; no clinical immune benefit |
The honest summary of the table: more human data than most peptides on this site can claim, all of it from the groups that developed the molecule, none of it placebo-controlled, and none of it by injection.
Selank Benefits
What Selank is, in one paragraph
Selank is a heptapeptide, seven amino acids long: Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four are tuftsin, a fragment the body cuts from immunoglobulin G and that was first characterised for its effects on immune cells. The last three, Pro-Gly-Pro, were added to slow enzymatic breakdown. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Moscow, and it is registered in Russia as a prescription medicine in an intranasal form. It is not a hormone, not a steroid and not a benzodiazepine, even though it is repeatedly compared with one.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 1: Less anxiety
What the research describes. This is where Selank's human evidence sits. Zozulya and colleagues, 2008, in the Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry, treated 62 patients with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia, 30 with Selank and 32 with the benzodiazepine medazepam, and assessed them on the Hamilton, Zung and CGI scales. The anxiolytic effect of the two was reported as similar, with Selank additionally described as anti-asthenic and mildly activating. Medvedev and colleagues, 2014, in the same journal, compared Selank with phenazepam in 60 patients with anxiety-phobic and somatoform disorders and reported a pronounced anxiolytic effect, a mild nootropic effect, an effect persisting about a week after the last dose, and improved quality-of-life scores.
Evidence type. Human, controlled against an active drug.
Strength. Real, and limited. The trials are small. Because the comparator was a benzodiazepine, they show "similar to medazepam" rather than "better than nothing." Blinding and randomisation are not described in the published abstracts, the outcomes are clinician-rated scales, and none has been replicated by an independent group outside Russia. A 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology characterised Selank as poorly studied outside its country of origin, which is fair. Selank is not a treatment for panic disorder and not a substitute for psychiatric care. The wider category is in peptides for anxiety and mood.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 2: Calm without sedation
What the research describes. The finding reported most consistently across the trials is what was absent. They used a formal side-effect scale (UKU) alongside a benzodiazepine comparator, and reported no sedation, no memory impairment, no dependence signal and no withdrawal over the study periods.
Evidence type. Human, the same small trials.
What it means. This is the reason Selank is described as an anxiolytic that does not slow you down. It is a reported finding from weeks-long studies of 60 to 70 people, not a guarantee, and it says nothing about years of use.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 3: Fewer benzodiazepine side effects
What the research describes. Medvedev and colleagues, 2015, treated 70 patients with anxiety-spectrum disorders, 30 on phenazepam alone and 40 on phenazepam plus Selank, and assessed them on HDRS, CGI, Spielberger, the UKU side-effect scale, Stroop and verbal-fluency tests and the SF-36. The combination was reported to bring the benzodiazepine's effect on earlier and to reduce its side effects, including attention and memory impairment, sedation, longer sleep and sexual disturbance, during treatment and after the benzodiazepine was withdrawn.
Evidence type. Human, one trial.
What it means. It is the only combination of Selank with another drug that has been studied, and it was done under supervision. It is not a reason to add Selank to a benzodiazepine on your own; anyone on psychiatric medication raises it at intake.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 4: Less stress reactivity
What the research describes. This is where the compound started. A 2003 paper in Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology compared Selank and ten related tuftsin-family peptides across rats and mice selected for different emotional reactivity, using a conflict-situation model of emotional stress, and reported positive emotional and anti-stress effects. A 2002 mouse study reported an anxiolytic effect in the open-field test in BALB/c mice and no effect in C57Bl/6 mice.
Evidence type. Animal.
What it means. The strain difference is worth noting: even in animals the response was not uniform. Prescribers describe any change in people as a sense of being less reactive to stress rather than an effect at the time of injection, and some people notice nothing.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 5: Focus, memory and the "nootropic" label
What the research describes. A 2019 paper in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine described a cognitive-stimulating effect in the object-recognition test in older rats not exposed to alcohol, and prevention of the memory and attention disturbances that otherwise developed during alcohol withdrawal. Several of the Russian clinical papers describe a "mild nootropic" effect in anxiety patients on attention and verbal-fluency tests, as a secondary observation.
Evidence type. Animal, plus secondary observations in patients with anxiety.
Strength. No trial has measured Selank's effect on memory, focus or productivity in healthy adults. If focus is the main complaint, Semax is the sibling peptide described around attention; Selank vs Semax explains the difference.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 6: GABA-A receptor modulation
What the research describes. The mechanism most often cited is at the GABA-A receptor, the family benzodiazepines act on. A 2018 paper in Protein and Peptide Letters used radioligand binding on isolated rat brain-cell membranes and reported that Selank changed the binding of labelled GABA in the manner of a positive allosteric modulator, altering how GABA itself bound rather than acting on the receptor directly. A 2016 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology reported changes in 45 of 84 neurotransmission genes in rat frontal cortex an hour after Selank, in a pattern correlating with what GABA produced. A 2017 follow-up found that in a human neuroblastoma cell line Selank alone changed none of those genes, but altered the response when GABA was added.
Evidence type. Cell and tissue.
What it means. The picture is a peptide that modifies GABA signalling rather than driving it, which is the proposed explanation for why the trials describe anxiolytic effects without sedation. It is a mechanism, not a measured effect in people.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 7: Slower enkephalin breakdown
What the research describes. The oldest proposed mechanism concerns the enkephalins, the body's short opioid peptides involved in stress and mood regulation. A 2001 paper in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine reported that Selank inhibited the enzymes that degrade leu-enkephalin in human plasma. In the 2008 Zozulya trial, serum leu-enkephalin half-life was low in patients and rose during Selank treatment, particularly in the generalised anxiety group.
Evidence type. Human plasma in vitro, plus one patient marker.
What it means. This is the one Selank mechanism with a human correlate. A marker moving in the same trial is consistent with the mechanism, not proof that it explains the result.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 8: BDNF in the hippocampus
What the research describes. A 2008 report in Doklady Biological Sciences described intranasal Selank changing BDNF expression in the rat hippocampus, and the 2019 rat paper reported that Selank prevented the ethanol-related shift in BDNF in the hippocampus and frontal cortex.
Evidence type. Animal.
Strength. Preclinical only. It is where the "nootropic" language comes from, and it has not been measured in people.
Selank Benefits
Benefit 9: Immune markers
What the research describes. The tuftsin heritage shows up as cytokine changes. A 2008 paper in the Korsakov Journal reported Selank suppressing IL-6 gene expression in blood cells taken from depressed patients but not from healthy controls, and Uchakina and colleagues, 2008, reported a shift in the Th1/Th2 cytokine balance in patients with anxiety-asthenic disorders over fourteen days of treatment.
Evidence type. Human blood markers.
What it means. None of this establishes a clinical immune benefit, and Pepti does not prescribe Selank for immune purposes.

What the evidence does not establish
| Question | What the research shows |
|---|---|
| Is Selank better than placebo for anxiety? | Not established. No placebo-controlled trial exists in the PubMed-indexed literature |
| Does the injection do what the nasal product did? | Unknown. The subcutaneous form has not been the subject of a published trial |
| Is there a dose-response relationship or a timeline? | Not for the subcutaneous route |
| Is it safe over years of use? | Not established; the trials ran for weeks |
| Is it safe alongside SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants or antipsychotics? | Not studied |
| Is it an approved treatment for anything? | Not in the United States |
Selank acetate was placed in Category 2 of the FDA's 503A bulk drug substances list on 29 September 2023 and removed on 27 September 2024, after the nominator said it had intended to nominate a different substance. It has never been reviewed by the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee and remains legal to prescribe and dispense. Any source telling you Selank has been established in Western clinical trials is wrong; the accurate framing is "reported in small Russian comparator trials."

Common questions
Selank Benefits, answered.
In small Russian trials of the intranasal product, Selank was reported to reduce anxiety about as much as the benzodiazepines medazepam and phenazepam, without their sedation or memory effects. In animals and cells it is described as modulating GABA signalling, slowing enkephalin breakdown and changing BDNF. None of the trials was placebo-controlled, and none used an injection.
That is the use it was studied for. Three Russian trials of 60 to 70 patients reported anxiolytic effects similar to a benzodiazepine. There is no placebo-controlled trial, and the results have not been replicated outside Russia.
The label comes from rat studies of memory and BDNF and a "mild nootropic" observation in anxiety trials. No trial has measured memory or focus in healthy adults.
The trials reported no sedation. Some people describe early fatigue or a flat feeling that usually settles. Selank is not a sleep medication; DSIP is the peptide aimed at sleep.
Cell research describes it acting on the same GABA-A receptor family, but by changing how GABA binds rather than acting directly. It is a peptide, not a benzodiazepine, and the trials reported no dependence or withdrawal.
It is not an antidepressant. One 2008 study reported immune-marker changes in blood cells from depressed patients; that is not evidence of an effect on depression.
Possibly indirectly, if anxiety is what gets in the way; that is the rationale for pairing it with Semax. No trial has measured focus in healthy adults.
There is no trial-established timeline for the injection. The Russian trials measured change over a few weeks, and prescribers describe any change as a lower baseline rather than an effect at the time of injection.
No. Compounded medications are not FDA approved, and Selank is not approved for anything in the United States. It was removed from the FDA's Category 2 list on 27 September 2024 and has not been reviewed by the advisory committee.
At Pepti, the Selank vial is $229 a month, all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping. Products that combine it run $249 to $279.
