Selank for Women: What the Research Has Looked At, and What to Check First

This page covers what Selank is, what research has and has not looked at, the considerations that change for women, how it sits alongside perimenopause, contraception and hormone therapy, and how Pepti supplies it. For the evidence benefit by benefit, see Selank benefits; for the product reference, what is Selank.

Selank (Injectable)
Selank$229/mo

No study has looked at Selank in women specifically: its human evidence is a set of small Russian trials in patients with anxiety disorders, compared with benzodiazepines, and the live research does not report separate results for women. Selank is not a hormone and is not described as acting on estrogen, progesterone or the menstrual cycle. For women, the practical points are what else is driving the anxiety, especially an overactive thyroid, the perimenopausal transition and poor sleep, and any psychiatric medication, sedative or regular drinking, all of which belong on the intake. Selank is not used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Compounded Selank is a prescription injection and is not FDA approved.

Selank for Women

The short answer

Question What the live research shows Strength of evidence
Has Selank been studied in women? Not as a separate group; the Russian trials enrolled patients with anxiety disorders and the live research reports no sex-specific results No female-specific data
What did the human trials show? Anxiolytic effects reported as similar to medazepam and phenazepam, without their sedation or memory effects Small comparator trials, not placebo-controlled
Does it act on hormones or the cycle? Not a hormone; not described as acting on estrogen, progesterone or the reproductive axis No study either way
Has it been studied for menopause? No; the trials were anxiety-disorder studies, not menopause studies None
Has the injection been tested? No; the trials and the Russian product are intranasal None for the subcutaneous route
Pregnancy or breastfeeding No human data; not used Clear exclusion

The honest summary: a real but small human evidence base in anxiety, from one country, with nothing that separates women from men.

Selank for Women

What Selank is, in one paragraph

Selank is a heptapeptide, seven amino acids: Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four are tuftsin, a fragment of the immunoglobulin G molecule the body produces naturally; the last three were added to slow its breakdown. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Moscow, and it is registered in Russia as an intranasal prescription medicine. Its most cited mechanism is positive allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptors, described in rat brain-cell membranes; an older line of work describes it slowing the breakdown of enkephalins. It is not a benzodiazepine, not a stimulant, not a steroid and not a hormone.

What research has looked at

The Russian anxiety trials

These are the human data:

Trial Who was enrolled Compared with What was reported
Zozulya and colleagues, 2008, Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry 62 patients with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia Medazepam Similar anxiolytic effect; Selank also described as anti-asthenic and mildly activating
Medvedev and colleagues, 2014, same journal 60 patients with anxiety-phobic and somatoform disorders Phenazepam Pronounced anxiolytic effect, a mild nootropic effect, effect persisting about a week after the last dose
Medvedev and colleagues, 2015, same journal 70 patients with anxiety-spectrum disorders Phenazepam alone vs phenazepam plus Selank Combination brought the benzodiazepine's effect on earlier and reduced its side effects

What they show. That in small groups of patients with diagnosed anxiety disorders, intranasal Selank was reported to perform similarly to an active benzodiazepine on clinician-rated anxiety scales, without the sedation and memory impairment of that class.

What they do not show. An effect against placebo, because none used one. Results for women separately, because the live research does not report them. Anything about the subcutaneous injection, because every trial used the intranasal route. Anything about menopause, because none was a menopause study. And none has been replicated by an independent group outside Russia; a 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology described Selank as poorly studied outside its country of origin.

The animal work

The anxiety work started in rats and mice. A 2002 mouse study reported an anxiolytic effect in one strain and none in another, so even in animals the response was not uniform. A 2016 rat study reported changes in 45 of 84 neurotransmission genes in the frontal cortex. None of this separates female and male animals in a way the live research reports, and none of it is a treatment claim.

What matters for women

  • Anxiety has findable causes worth checking first

Anxiety that arrives without an obvious reason has causes a physician will want to think about before any peptide. Thyroid disease is far more common in women than in men, and an overactive thyroid produces exactly the racing, wired feeling people describe. Iron deficiency, common because of menstrual blood loss, feeds fatigue, poor sleep and low mood; ferritin can be low while a full blood count reads normal. Short or broken sleep, heavy caffeine, regular drinking and stimulant medication all feed anxiety too. Selank responds to none of these. Your physician works through them from your intake.

  • Perimenopause and the wired-but-tired state

The perimenopausal transition typically begins in the forties and runs for several years before periods stop. Ovarian hormone output fluctuates rather than declining smoothly, and anxiety and low mood that arrive without a reason are one of the ways it shows up, alongside broken sleep. Pepti's menopause guide describes Selank as suiting "mental clutter and a stress response that will not switch off, more than low mood," and is clear that it is not a treatment for the transition. Peptides do not replace menopausal hormone therapy, and if the transition is the driver, that belongs in the conversation with your physician. Depression and anxiety disorders also peak around the transition and warrant their own treatment; Selank is not an antidepressant. More is in peptides for menopause.

  • Existing psychiatric care comes first

If you are on an SSRI, SNRI, benzodiazepine or antipsychotic, or have been diagnosed with panic disorder, bipolar disorder or major depression, that treatment comes first and Selank is at most an adjunct your prescriber may or may not agree to. Selank is not a treatment for panic disorder and not a substitute for psychiatric care. The 2015 trial that added Selank to phenazepam was a supervised combination with one specific benzodiazepine, not a reason to add Selank to a sedative on your own. Wider options are in peptides for anxiety and mood.

  • Hormones, the cycle, birth control and hormone therapy

Selank is not a hormone and is not described as acting on estrogen, progesterone or the reproductive axis. No study has looked at cycle effects, at hormonal contraception alongside Selank, or at menopausal hormone therapy alongside it. The accurate answer is "no interaction described, none studied." List your contraception and any hormone therapy on the intake so your physician can review them together. If your cycle changes on treatment, report it; it is more likely to have another cause, but it should be looked at.

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding and trying to conceive

Selank has no human pregnancy or lactation data, and the research behind it was conducted entirely in non-pregnant populations. It is not used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Its effect on fertility is unknown rather than shown to be nil. If you are trying to conceive, tell your physician before starting. If you become pregnant on treatment, stop and contact your physician the same day. Can you take peptides while pregnant and do peptides affect fertility cover the detail.

  • Alcohol and sedatives

Selank is described as modulating the same GABA-A receptor family sedatives act on, and no study has looked at it alongside alcohol in people. Regular drinking, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines and opioids all go on the intake. The detail is in can you drink alcohol on Selank.

  • Sport

If you compete in a tested sport, check the current WADA Prohibited List and your governing body before starting anything, and tell your physician. A prescription is not an exemption. Is Selank banned in sports covers its status.

Selank for Women

What the evidence does not establish

  • An effect in women specifically. No result for women has been reported separately.
  • An effect size against placebo. No placebo-controlled trial exists in the indexed literature.
  • Anything about the subcutaneous injection. The trials used the intranasal route.
  • Any effect on menopause symptoms, the menstrual cycle or fertility. None was studied.
  • Safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is no data.
  • Long-term safety over years of continuous use. The trials ran for weeks.
  • Anything about combining Selank with SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants, hormonal contraception or hormone therapy. None has been studied.
  • Efficacy for any condition as an approved treatment. Selank is not FDA approved for anything.

Side effects and considerations

Nothing in the live research suggests the side-effect profile differs between women and men.

What is reported or relevant When What to do
Injection-site redness, mild soreness, occasional bruising The commonest complaint Rotate sites
Fatigue or a flat, low-drive feeling In the first days, usually settling Tell your care team if it persists
Feeling wired A small number of people, usually settling Tell your care team if it persists
Sedation, memory impairment, dependence or withdrawal Reported as absent in the Russian trials Report anything like it
A marked change in mood Not a described effect, but always reportable Contact your physician promptly
Facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, difficulty breathing Rare Emergency care first (call 911), then tell your physician

A flat feeling early on is worth separating from fatigue you already had. If it does not settle, report it rather than assuming it is the peptide, and do not change the dose yourself. More is in Selank side effects.

Where Selank stands with the FDA

Selank acetate was placed in Category 2 of the FDA's 503A bulk substances list on 29 September 2023, the category for nominated substances with identified safety concerns. On 27 September 2024 the FDA removed it after the nominator said it had intended to nominate a different substance. It now appears only as "nominated but withdrawn," was not part of the April 2026 removals, and has not been reviewed by the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee. It is prescribed and dispensed by state-licensed pharmacies pursuant to a prescription. Compounded medications are not FDA approved.

How Pepti supplies Selank

Product What is in it Typical directions Price
Selank 5 mL multi-dose vial, Selank 2 mg/mL (10 mg per vial) 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday; 0.5 mg per dose $229/mo
Semax + Selank 1 mg Semax and 1 mg Selank Printed on the vial $259/mo
SERENITY 5 mL: 5 mg DSIP, 5 mg Selank, 6 mg CJC-1295, 12 mg ipamorelin 0.25 mL (25 units) Monday through Friday nights at bedtime $279/mo
SYNAPSE 5 mL: 5 mg Semax, 5 mg Selank, 10 mg MOTS-c, 10 mg tesamorelin 0.25 mL (25 units) once daily Monday through Friday $279/mo
ELEVATE 5 mL: 5 mg Semax, 5 mg Selank, 10 mg BPC-157, 10 mg KPV 0.25 mL (25 units) once daily Monday through Friday $249/mo

The single Selank vial holds 20 doses at 0.25 mL, about four weeks of weekday dosing, so refills run every 28 days, one vial per fill. Where the 3am wake is the bigger complaint, Pepti's menopause guide describes SERENITY, which pairs Selank with DSIP and a growth-hormone secretagogue pair, for sleep and stress together; SYNAPSE contains tesamorelin, whose approved product is contraindicated in pregnancy. Where focus is the bigger complaint than stress, Semax is the sibling peptide from the same Russian programme; the comparison is in Selank vs Semax. Dosing detail is in Selank dosage. Your physician sets your directions after reviewing your intake, and they are printed on the vial.

Every price is all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping, with no membership fee. Pepti is cash-pay and does not bill insurance. Vials arrive as solutions ready to use, with sterile syringes and alcohol prep pads, shipped refrigerated with ice packs. Lot test results are at /quality/lab-results.

Where to get Selank prescribed

Selank cannot be bought legitimately without a prescription. Sites selling it "for research use only" are not accountable for identity, purity, sterility or concentration. The prescription route:

  1. Complete a free online intake covering your history, medications, pregnancy and contraception status, alcohol use and what you want help with.
  2. A physician licensed in your state reviews it, usually within 24 hours.
  3. If it is appropriate, a PCAB-accredited, FDA-registered US 503A compounding pharmacy prepares it to that prescription.
  4. It ships refrigerated with your directions printed on the vial.
  5. Your physician stays reachable for questions and side effects.

Step by step: how to get Selank prescribed online. Bloodwork is not required for any Pepti treatment. If your physician wants labs for your care, they'll ask through your account.

Common questions

Selank for Women, answered.

Research has not looked at women separately. The human evidence is small Russian trials in patients with anxiety disorders, reporting effects similar to benzodiazepines without their sedation. That evidence applies to women and men alike, with its limits: no placebo, intranasal route, not replicated outside Russia.
