Selank for Men: What the Research Has Looked At, and What to Check First
This page covers what Selank is, what research has and has not looked at, the considerations that matter for men, how it sits alongside testosterone, alcohol, fertility and sport, and how Pepti supplies it. For the evidence benefit by benefit, see Selank benefits; for the product reference, what is Selank.

Treatments mentioned
No study has looked at Selank in men specifically: its human evidence is a set of small Russian trials in patients with anxiety disorders, compared with benzodiazepines, and the live research does not report separate results for men. Selank is not a hormone, does not bind the androgen receptor and is not described as acting on testosterone. For men, the practical points are what else is driving the stress or anxiety, any psychiatric medication, sedative or regular drinking, and testosterone therapy, all of which belong on the intake. One trial reported fewer benzodiazepine side effects, sexual ones included, when Selank was added, which is a finding about the combination and not a libido effect. Compounded Selank is a prescription injection and is not FDA approved.

Selank for Men
The short answer
| Question | What the live research shows | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Has Selank been studied in men? | Not as a separate group; the Russian trials enrolled patients with anxiety disorders and the live research reports no sex-specific results | No male-specific data |
| What did the human trials show? | Anxiolytic effects reported as similar to medazepam and phenazepam, without their sedation or memory effects | Small comparator trials, not placebo-controlled, not described as blinded |
| Does it affect testosterone? | Not a hormone, does not bind the androgen receptor, not described as acting on testosterone | No study either way |
| Does it cause sexual side effects? | None described; one trial reported fewer benzodiazepine side effects, sexual disturbance among them, with Selank added | One small combination trial |
| Has the injection been tested? | No; the trials and the Russian product are intranasal | None for the subcutaneous route |
| Fertility | No human data on semen parameters | None |
The honest summary: a real but small human evidence base in anxiety, from one country, with nothing that separates men from women.
Selank for Men
What Selank is, in one paragraph
Selank is a heptapeptide, seven amino acids: Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four are tuftsin, a fragment of the immunoglobulin G molecule the body produces naturally; the last three were added to slow its breakdown. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Moscow, and it is registered in Russia as an intranasal prescription medicine. Its most cited mechanism is positive allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptors, described in rat brain-cell membranes; an older line of work describes it slowing the breakdown of enkephalins. It is not a benzodiazepine, not a stimulant and not a steroid.

What research has looked at
The Russian anxiety trials
These are the human data, and they are more than most peptides can claim:
| Trial | Who was enrolled | Compared with | What was reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zozulya and colleagues, 2008, Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry | 62 patients with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia | Medazepam | Similar anxiolytic effect; Selank also described as anti-asthenic and mildly activating; serum leu-enkephalin half-life rose during treatment |
| Medvedev and colleagues, 2014, same journal | 60 patients with anxiety-phobic and somatoform disorders | Phenazepam | Pronounced anxiolytic effect, a mild nootropic effect, effect persisting about a week after the last dose |
| Medvedev and colleagues, 2015, same journal | 70 patients with anxiety-spectrum disorders | Phenazepam alone vs phenazepam plus Selank | Combination brought the benzodiazepine's effect on earlier and reduced its side effects |
What they show. That in small groups of patients with diagnosed anxiety disorders, intranasal Selank was reported to perform similarly to an active benzodiazepine on clinician-rated anxiety scales, without the sedation and memory impairment of that class.
What they do not show. An effect against placebo, because none used one. Results for men separately, because the live research does not report them. Anything about the subcutaneous injection, because every trial used the intranasal route. Anything about healthy men with ordinary work stress, because the patients had diagnosed disorders. And none has been replicated by an independent group outside Russia; a 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology described Selank as poorly studied outside its country of origin.
The animal work
The anxiety work started in rats and mice. A 2002 mouse study reported an anxiolytic effect in one strain and none in another, so even in animals the response was not uniform. A 2019 rat paper described better object-recognition performance and preserved BDNF in animals exposed to chronic ethanol. A 2016 rat study reported changes in 45 of 84 neurotransmission genes in the frontal cortex. None of this separates male and female animals in a way the live research reports, and none of it is a treatment claim.
Selank for Men
What matters for men
Stress and anxiety have causes worth looking at first
Selank is prescribed around stress and anxiety, and those have causes a physician will want to think about before any peptide: poor or short sleep, heavy caffeine, regular drinking, stimulant medication, an overactive thyroid, and a mood or anxiety disorder that deserves its own treatment. If you are on an SSRI, SNRI, benzodiazepine or antipsychotic, or have been diagnosed with panic disorder, bipolar disorder or major depression, that treatment comes first and Selank is at most an adjunct your prescriber may or may not agree to. Selank is not a treatment for panic disorder and not a substitute for psychiatric care. Wider options are in peptides for anxiety and mood.
Testosterone
Selank is not a hormone and does not act on the androgen receptor or suppress anything the body produces. No study has measured testosterone, LH or FSH on Selank, so the accurate answer is "not expected to affect it, never measured." If you are on testosterone therapy, list it on the intake; no interaction has been described, but none has been studied either. Low mood, low drive and poor sleep can come from low testosterone as well as from stress, and the two are worth separating rather than treating one and assuming the other. The hormone side is covered in peptides for testosterone, and the wider picture for this age group in peptides for men over 40.
Sexual function
No sexual side effect is described for Selank. The point that comes up for men is the 2015 trial: in 70 patients, those given the benzodiazepine phenazepam plus Selank were reported to have fewer of the benzodiazepine's side effects, including attention and memory impairment, sedation, longer sleep and sexual disturbance, both during treatment and after the benzodiazepine was withdrawn. That is a finding about a supervised combination with a specific benzodiazepine. It does not make Selank a libido or erection treatment, and it is not a reason to add Selank to a benzodiazepine on your own. If sexual function is the actual concern, it is its own conversation, covered in peptides for libido.
Alcohol and sedatives
Selank is described as modulating the same GABA-A receptor family sedatives act on, and no study has looked at it alongside alcohol in people. Regular drinking, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines and opioids all go on the intake. The detail is in can you drink alcohol on Selank.
Fertility
No peptide in Pepti's catalog has human data on semen parameters, Selank included, so its effect on sperm is unknown rather than shown to be nil. Selank is not described as acting on the reproductive axis. If you and a partner are actively trying to conceive, tell your physician before starting; do peptides affect fertility covers the conversation, including the one well-documented male fertility effect in this area, which is testosterone therapy suppressing sperm production.
Sport
If you compete in a tested sport, check the current WADA Prohibited List and your governing body before starting anything, and tell your physician. A prescription is not an exemption. Do peptides show up on a drug test covers how testing works.
Selank for Men
What the evidence does not establish
- An effect in men specifically. No result for men has been reported separately.
- An effect size against placebo. No placebo-controlled trial exists in the indexed literature.
- Anything about the subcutaneous injection. The trials used the intranasal route.
- An effect on testosterone, sexual function or fertility. None was measured for Selank alone.
- Long-term safety over years of continuous use. The trials ran for weeks.
- Anything about combining Selank with SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants, antipsychotics or testosterone. None has been studied.
- Efficacy for any condition as an approved treatment. Selank is not FDA approved for anything.

Side effects and considerations
Nothing in the live research suggests the side-effect profile differs between men and women.
| What is reported or relevant | When | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Injection-site redness, mild soreness, occasional bruising | The commonest complaint | Rotate sites |
| Fatigue or a flat, low-drive feeling | In the first days, usually settling | Tell your care team if it persists |
| Feeling wired | A small number of people, usually settling | Tell your care team if it persists |
| Sedation, memory impairment, dependence or withdrawal | Reported as absent in the Russian trials | Report anything like it |
| A marked change in mood | Not a described effect, but always reportable | Contact your physician promptly |
| Facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, difficulty breathing | Rare | Emergency care first (call 911), then tell your physician |
A flat, low-drive feeling early on is worth separating from a pre-existing problem with energy or drive. If it does not settle, report it rather than assuming it is the peptide, and do not change the dose yourself. More is in Selank side effects.

Where Selank stands with the FDA
Selank acetate was placed in Category 2 of the FDA's 503A bulk substances list on 29 September 2023, the category for nominated substances with identified safety concerns. On 27 September 2024 the FDA removed it after the nominator said it had intended to nominate a different substance. It now appears only as "nominated but withdrawn," was not part of the April 2026 removals, and has not been reviewed by the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee. It is prescribed and dispensed by state-licensed pharmacies pursuant to a prescription. Compounded medications are not FDA approved.

Common questions
Selank for Men, answered.
Research has not looked at men separately. The human evidence is small Russian trials in patients with anxiety disorders, reporting effects similar to benzodiazepines without their sedation. That evidence applies to men and women alike, with its limits: no placebo, intranasal route, not replicated outside Russia.
What research has looked at is anxiety, in small comparator trials, plus animal work on memory and BDNF. No benefit specific to men has been studied. See Selank benefits.
It is not a hormone, does not bind the androgen receptor and is not described as acting on testosterone. No study has measured it either way.
No interaction has been described, but none has been studied. List your testosterone therapy on the intake so your physician can review the two together.
No sexual side effect is described for Selank. One 2015 trial reported fewer benzodiazepine side effects, sexual disturbance among them, when Selank was added to phenazepam. That is not evidence that Selank treats libido or erections.
There is no human data on Selank and semen parameters. If you are trying to conceive, tell your physician before starting.
The trials were in patients with diagnosed anxiety disorders, not healthy adults with work stress, so that use has not been tested. Your physician reviews your intake and tells you whether Selank fits what you have described.
No interaction has been described, but none has been studied, and Selank is described as acting on the same receptor family sedatives use. Tell your physician what you drink. See can you drink alcohol on Selank.
Check the current WADA Prohibited List and your governing body before starting, and tell your physician. A prescription is not an exemption.
The same as for women: mostly injection-site reactions, sometimes early fatigue or a flat feeling, less often feeling wired, both usually settling. The Russian trials reported no sedation, memory impairment, dependence or withdrawal.
At Pepti, Selank is $229 a month, all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping.
