Why Selank needs a prescription
It is a drug, not a supplement
Selank is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide built from tuftsin, a fragment the body cuts from immunoglobulin G, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added so it survives enzymatic breakdown. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Moscow, and the research describes it acting on anxiety-related pathways. An injectable compound studied as an anxiolytic is a drug under US law, not a dietary product.
The statute that makes it prescription-only
Section 503(b) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines a prescription drug as one that is not safe for use except under the supervision of a licensed practitioner, including because of the method of its use. An injectable peptide meets that test. It may be dispensed only on a prescription, and the rule attaches to the person dispensing it.
Why a compounded version can exist without FDA approval
Section 503A of the same Act exempts a drug compounded for an identified individual patient on a valid prescription, by a licensed pharmacist in a state-licensed pharmacy, from the approval requirement. Why the intake matters for Selank
The published research does not establish anything about combining Selank with SSRIs, SNRIs or other psychiatric medication, because that has not been studied. What "research use only" means legally
A regulation, 21 CFR 201.125, exempts a drug from carrying directions for use when it is sold for laboratory research not involving clinical use. A person injecting the contents is the clinical use that exemption excludes. A second regulation, 21 CFR 201.128, says intended use is shown by what the seller says and advertises, so a site publishing Selank dosing advice next to a "not for human consumption" label is describing a human use.

What the evidence shows, honestly
A prescription makes Selank lawful. It does not make the evidence stronger. Selank has controlled human trials, which is more than most peptides can say, but they are small, Russian, published in Russian and compared against an active drug rather than placebo.

Blinding is not described, none of the trials has been independently replicated outside Russia, and a 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology characterised Selank as poorly studied outside its country of origin.
