5-Amino-1MQ for Men: What the Research Has Looked At, and What to Check First
This page covers what 5-Amino-1MQ is, what research has and has not looked at, what changes for men, how it sits alongside testosterone, fertility and training, and how Pepti supplies it. For the evidence claim by claim, see 5-Amino-1MQ benefits; for the product reference, what is 5-Amino-1MQ.

Treatments mentioned
No study has tested 5-Amino-1MQ in men, or in any person: its research is in cultured fat cells and mice, where it limited weight and fat gain in diet-induced obese animals and supported grip strength in aged mice. It is a small molecule that blocks the enzyme NNMT, not a hormone, and nothing in the research describes it acting on testosterone. For a man whose waist has grown since his thirties, the findable causes, poor glucose control, sleep apnoea, low testosterone and thyroid disease, come first, and the medications with human evidence for weight or visceral fat are different ones. 5-Amino-1MQ is a compounded prescription injection at Pepti and is not FDA approved.

5-Amino-1MQ for Men
The short answer
| Question | What the live research shows | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Has 5-Amino-1MQ been studied in men? | No; there are no human studies of any design | None |
| Does it raise testosterone? | Not described; it is not a hormone and does not act on a hormone receptor | No mechanism, no data |
| Does it reduce fat? | Limited weight and fat-mass gain in diet-induced obese mice (2018, 2024) | Preclinical only |
| Does it build muscle? | Greater grip strength in aged mice, more with exercise (2024); muscle repair after injury in aged mice (2019) | Preclinical only |
| Is its target relevant to people? | NNMT roughly twofold higher in fat tissue in type 2 diabetes (Diabetologia, 2015, 199 people) | About the enzyme, not the compound |
| Does it affect fertility? | Not studied | Unknown |
The honest summary: a consistent mouse and cell story, one human observation about the enzyme it targets, and nothing about men specifically.

What 5-Amino-1MQ is, in one paragraph
5-Amino-1MQ is 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium, a small synthetic molecule built on a quinolinium ring, with no amino acids in it, so it is not a peptide; is 5-Amino-1MQ a peptide explains why. It came from a medicinal chemistry programme at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. It blocks nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme that uses up nicotinamide, a precursor of NAD+, and SAM, the cell's main methyl donor. Blocking it is proposed to keep both in the cell and shift fat cells toward using energy. It is not a hormone, not a growth hormone secretagogue, not a GLP-1 medication, not a stimulant, and it does not contain NAD+.

What research has looked at
Fat gain in mice
The 2018 Biochemical Pharmacology study treated diet-induced obese mice with an NNMT inhibitor and reported reduced body weight, reduced white fat mass, smaller fat cells and lower total cholesterol, with total food intake unchanged. The 2024 paper in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism dosed the compound once daily for 28 days and reported dose-dependent limiting of weight and fat-mass gain, better glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, and less fatty liver. A 2022 Scientific Reports study found the inhibitor plus a switch to a low-fat diet normalized weight faster than the diet switch alone.
What it does not show. These are mouse findings. The live pages do not report the sex of the animals, and no result was presented as being about males. Mouse body-composition findings frequently do not translate to people, and this compound has not been tested for translation.
Aged muscle and strength
A 2019 paper in Biochemical Pharmacology described NNMT as overexpressed in aged skeletal muscle. In 24-month-old mice with an acute muscle injury, treatment was reported to raise muscle stem cell activity and support larger regenerated fibres. A 2024 Scientific Reports study treated mice from 22 to 24 months of age with the inhibitor, intensive exercise, or both, and reported around 40 percent greater grip strength in treated sedentary mice than in sedentary controls, with an additive effect alongside exercise.
What it does not show. The mice were chosen because they recapitulate features of human sarcopenia, age-related muscle loss. That is a rationale for studying it in older people. It is not a study in people, and 5-Amino-1MQ is not a treatment for muscle loss.
The one human finding, about the enzyme
A 2015 study in Diabetologia measured NNMT in fat tissue from 199 people having abdominal surgery and reported it roughly twofold higher in type 2 diabetes, with levels tracking insulin resistance. Exercise and bariatric surgery were associated with lower NNMT. Nobody in that study was given 5-Amino-1MQ, and the live pages do not report a separate result for men.

What changes for men
It is not a testosterone treatment
5-Amino-1MQ is not a hormone and does not act on a hormone receptor. Nothing in its research describes an effect on testosterone, LH or the testes. Pepti does not prescribe or sell testosterone, and no peptide or small molecule here is a substitute for testosterone replacement. The live guidance on low testosterone is specific: it is a diagnosis confirmed by morning blood tests on at least two separate days with symptoms, and sleep apnoea, weight, alcohol and medications can all lower it. More is in peptides for testosterone.
A softening waist has findable causes
The live guidance for men over 40 is consistent: before any of these medications, a competent physician considers sleep apnoea, low testosterone, poor glucose control and thyroid disease, because those explain most of the usual complaint list and none of them is fixed by a vial. The fat gained after 40 is disproportionately visceral, inside the abdomen. See peptides for men over 40.
Where the human evidence for weight and visceral fat actually is
If the goal is The option with human evidence What the evidence is Meaningful weight loss Semaglutide or tirzepatide Large randomized trials in obesity for the approved versions Visceral fat specifically Tesamorelin Randomized trials measuring visceral fat by CT, in a specific population A metabolic adjunct alongside training 5-Amino-1MQ Mouse and cell studies only 5-Amino-1MQ is not described as suppressing appetite; the 2018 mice ate the same amount. That difference in mechanism is why some physicians prescribe it alongside a GLP-1 rather than instead of one, though no human study has tested that combination. See what peptides can you take with tirzepatide.
Training
Both the diet-switch study and the aged-muscle exercise study paired the inhibitor with a lifestyle change and reported the combination doing more than either alone. Prescribers describe 5-Amino-1MQ the same way: as an adjunct to diet and training, not a replacement for them. Prescribers who track a response describe a waist measurement and how clothes fit rather than the scale.
Testosterone replacement
If you are already on testosterone from another prescriber, both prescribers should know about the other. No interaction between 5-Amino-1MQ and testosterone has been described, but there is no established interaction list for 5-Amino-1MQ at all, and NNMT also methylates foreign compounds, which is a theoretical reason for care with other medications. List the formulation, dose and interval on your intake. Can you take peptides with testosterone covers how that disclosure works.
Fertility
Fertility has not been studied for 5-Amino-1MQ, so nobody can say the effect either way. If conception is a near-term goal, tell your physician before starting, because that changes what is prescribed and when. Separately, exogenous testosterone suppresses sperm production, which matters if you are on TRT; see do peptides affect fertility.
Sport
The live pages do not name 5-Amino-1MQ on the WADA Prohibited List. Tested athletes should check the current list for their sport before starting anything; peptides for athletes covers the general rules.

What the evidence does not establish
- That 5-Amino-1MQ does anything in men, or in any person. There are no human trials of any design.
- Any effect on testosterone or other hormones. None is described.
- An effect size or a timeline. The 28-day mouse study is the closest thing to a duration reference, and a mouse timeline is not a human one.
- That it raises NAD+ in people. That was measured in cultured fat cells only.
- Long-term safety in humans, or an interaction profile.
- Efficacy for any condition as an FDA-approved treatment. It is not approved for anything.

Side effects and considerations
| What is reported or relevant | Where it comes from | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Injection-site redness, mild soreness, occasional bruising | What prescribers report | Rotate sites between abdomen and thigh |
| No observable adverse effects at the doses used | The 2018 mouse work, not a toxicology study | Not a human safety finding |
| Other medications, including testosterone | NNMT also methylates foreign compounds; no interaction list | List everything on your intake |

Where 5-Amino-1MQ stands with the FDA
5-Amino-1MQ is not an FDA-approved drug or a component of one, and has no USP monograph. It does not appear on the 503A bulks list, or in Category 1, 2 or 3 of the FDA's nominated-substances list as updated 14 May 2026. The FDA has never published a safety-risk finding about it, and it was not among the substances the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee reviewed in July 2026. It has simply not been through the FDA's evaluation process. Compounded medications are not FDA approved.

How Pepti supplies 5-Amino-1MQ
| Product | What is in it | Typical directions | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-Amino-1MQ | 5 mL multi-dose vial, 1 mg/mL (5 mg) | 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday | $219/mo |
| FUSION Blend | 10 mg BPC-157, 10 mg MOTS-c, 10 mg 5-Amino-1MQ, 15 mg tesamorelin in 5 mL | 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday | $279/mo |
At 1 mg/mL, the printed 0.25 mL dose is 0.25 mg of 5-Amino-1MQ, and a vial holds 20 doses, about four weeks, so refills run every 28 days, one vial per fill. In FUSION, at 2 mg/mL of 5-Amino-1MQ, the same 0.25 mL holds 0.5 mg alongside the other three ingredients. Note that FUSION contains MOTS-c, which is prohibited at all times by WADA. That is arithmetic, not advice: your physician sets your directions after reviewing your intake, and they are printed on the vial. More is in 5-Amino-1MQ dosage.
Every price is all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping, with no membership fee. Pepti is cash-pay and does not bill insurance. Pepti supplies 5-Amino-1MQ as an injection only. Vials arrive ready to use, with sterile syringes and alcohol prep pads, shipped refrigerated with ice packs. Lot test results are at /quality/lab-results.

Common questions
5-Amino-1MQ for Men, answered.
No study has tested it in men or in anyone. In mice it limited weight and fat gain on a high-fat diet and supported grip strength in old age. Any benefit for men is described from mouse work, not established.
Nothing in its research describes that. It is not a hormone and does not act on a hormone receptor. If testosterone is low on two morning blood tests with symptoms, that is a separate diagnosis with its own treatment.
It has not been tested in people. In diet-induced obese mice it limited fat-mass gain. For visceral fat specifically, tesamorelin has human trials in a specific population; for overall weight, the GLP-1 medications do.
No study has tested that in people. In aged mice it supported muscle repair after injury and greater grip strength, more so with exercise. That is a rationale for research, not evidence in men.
No interaction has been described, but there is no established interaction list. Tell both prescribers about both treatments and list your testosterone on the intake.
It has not been studied. If you are trying to conceive, tell your physician before starting. Testosterone replacement, separately, does suppress sperm production.
Some physicians prescribe them together because they act through different mechanisms. No human study has tested the combination. Your physician reviews it with your full medication list.
The live pages do not name it on the WADA list. Check the current list for your sport before starting. The FUSION Blend contains MOTS-c, which is prohibited at all times.
The same as for anyone: mostly injection-site redness, soreness or bruising. There is no human safety database, so the intake asks for every medication and supplement you take.
At Pepti, the vial is $219 a month and the FUSION Blend is $279 a month, all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping.
No. It is not an approved drug, and compounded medications are not FDA approved. The FDA has not evaluated it for compounding in either direction.
No. Bloodwork is not required for any Pepti treatment. If your physician wants labs for your care, they'll ask through your account. The free assessment goes to a physician licensed in your state. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription.
