Kisspeptin for Women: Ovulation, Desire Research and the Cautions

This page covers what kisspeptin is, what research has looked at in women and what it has not, the considerations that change for women, its FDA position, and how Pepti supplies it. The full reference is what is kisspeptin.

Kisspeptin (Injectable)
Kisspeptin$229/mo

Kisspeptin has been studied in women more than most peptides, but almost entirely with kisspeptin-54, the full-length form, given as single doses or short courses: it prompted the LH surge most strongly in the days before ovulation, stimulated the reproductive hormones in women with hypothalamic amenorrhea, served as an egg-maturation trigger in IVF trials, and in a 2022 randomized trial in premenopausal women with low desire increased activation in sexual-processing brain regions on MRI. No trial has tested a weekday course of subcutaneous kisspeptin-10, the form Pepti supplies, in women. Kisspeptin acts directly on the reproductive axis, so it is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding and is not a fertility treatment. Kisspeptin-10 remains in Category 2 of the FDA's interim 503A list, and compounded kisspeptin is not FDA approved.

Kisspeptin for Women

The short answer

Question What the live research shows Form and route
Does it act on the reproductive axis in women? LH response greatest in the days before ovulation (JCEM, 2007) Kisspeptin-54, subcutaneous
Hypothalamic amenorrhea Stimulated LH and FSH; faded with twice-daily dosing (2009), held with twice-weekly dosing over eight weeks (2010) Kisspeptin-54, subcutaneous
IVF egg-maturation trigger Egg maturation in the large majority, followed by live births (JCI, 2014); follow-up trials in 2015 and 2017 Kisspeptin-54, one or two doses in a fertility clinic
Low desire (HSDD) Increased activation in sexual-processing brain regions on fMRI (JAMA Network Open, 2022) Kisspeptin-54, single intravenous infusion
A weekday course of kisspeptin-10 in women Not trialled; the FDA found one study of a single subcutaneous kisspeptin-10 dose in healthy women None
Menopause No study in the live research enrolled perimenopausal or postmenopausal women None
Pregnancy or breastfeeding Not used Clear exclusion

The physiology is well mapped in women. The product as it is prescribed has not been tested in them.

Kisspeptin for Women

What kisspeptin is, in one paragraph

Kisspeptin is a family of peptides encoded by the KISS1 gene. A precursor is cut into kisspeptin-54 and shorter fragments that share the same ten-amino-acid tail, which binds the receptor KISS1R. Kisspeptin is released by hypothalamic neurons and acts on the neurons that make gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH); GnRH tells the pituitary to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which drive estrogen production and ovulation in the ovaries. It is not a sex hormone and does not act on the ovaries directly; it is the upstream signal. Its reproductive role was recognized in 2003, when two groups reported in the New England Journal of Medicine and PNAS that people born with a non-functioning KISS1R do not go through puberty. The product at Pepti is kisspeptin-10, the shortest active fragment, not the kisspeptin-54 used in most of the human trials below.

What research has looked at in women

  • The LH surge and the cycle

A 2007 paper in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reported that the LH response to subcutaneous kisspeptin-54 in healthy women varied across the cycle and was greatest in the days before ovulation. In women, the same signal that drives the axis triggers ovulation, which is the basis of the IVF work. A 2011 study in the same journal reported that kisspeptin's effect differed between men and women, which is one reason findings in men, where most of the hormone studies were done, do not transfer directly.

  • Hypothalamic amenorrhea

Women whose periods have stopped because of low body weight, stress or over-training have a suppressed axis with intact ovaries. A 2009 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism gave these women twice-daily subcutaneous kisspeptin-54 for two weeks: the axis was stimulated and then the response faded, a phenomenon called tachyphylaxis. A 2010 study in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics gave twice-weekly injections for eight weeks and the response held.

What it shows. That spacing matters: continuous exposure blunts the response, intermittent exposure preserves it. This is why a kisspeptin schedule is built around gaps.

What it does not show. These were small physiological studies. They did not measure whether ovulation or fertility was restored, and they are not evidence that kisspeptin treats amenorrhea.

  • IVF: the egg-maturation trigger

This is the most clinically developed line of work. A 2014 paper in the Journal of Clinical Investigation reported that a single subcutaneous injection of kisspeptin-54, given in place of the usual hCG trigger to women undergoing IVF, produced egg maturation in the large majority and was followed by healthy live births. A 2015 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism extended this to women at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and a 2017 phase 2 randomized trial in Human Reproduction tested a second dose in that group. The idea is to prompt a woman's own LH surge rather than substitute for it.

What it does not mean. Those were one- or two-dose triggers of kisspeptin-54, inside monitored IVF cycles, run by reproductive endocrinologists. That is fertility-clinic territory, not a wellness prescription, and kisspeptin at Pepti is not a fertility treatment.

  • Desire: the 2022 trial

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in JAMA Network Open in 2022 enrolled premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). A kisspeptin-54 infusion increased activation in sexual-processing brain regions on functional MRI, and the treatment was described as well tolerated, with no serious adverse events attributed to it. The trial is real and randomized; it is also small, single-session and intravenous, and it measured brain response rather than months of desire in daily life.

For comparison, PT-141 has two phase 3 trials in 1,267 premenopausal women with HSDD. When desire is the isolated complaint, PT-141 has by far the larger evidence base; kisspeptin is the one with a hormonal mechanism. See kisspeptin vs PT-141 and PT-141 for women.

  • Kisspeptin-10 in women

The FDA's review found one study of a single subcutaneous kisspeptin-10 dose in healthy women and none by the intramuscular route. Most kisspeptin-10 hormone work was in men. There are no randomized trials of a subcutaneous kisspeptin-10 course taken over weeks, in women or men, for desire or anything else.

Kisspeptin for Women

What the evidence does not establish

  • That a weekday course of subcutaneous kisspeptin-10 changes desire, mood, energy or the cycle in women.
  • That it restores ovulation or periods, or improves fertility. The amenorrhea studies did not measure that, and the IVF work used a different form under specialist monitoring.
  • Any effect in perimenopausal or postmenopausal women, who were not studied in the live research.
  • Safety of repeated subcutaneous kisspeptin-10 injections over months. This is the gap the FDA has flagged.
  • An effect size, a timeline, or efficacy for any condition as an approved treatment.

What changes for women

  • Pregnancy, trying to conceive and breastfeeding

Kisspeptin is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding; safety data is absent, and it acts directly on the reproductive axis. Supervised fertility-clinic use of kisspeptin-54 as a single trigger is not evidence that ongoing dosing is appropriate during a pregnancy. If you are actively trying to conceive or in an IVF cycle, that literature is a reason to treat kisspeptin with more caution, not less: raise it with the physician managing your fertility care first, and expect elective peptide therapy to pause. If you become pregnant on treatment, stop and contact your physician the same day. See do peptides affect fertility and can you take peptides while pregnant.

  • Hormone-sensitive conditions

Because kisspeptin stimulates sex-hormone production, a hormone-sensitive condition, including a history of hormone-sensitive cancer, must be raised with the physician before starting kisspeptin or the EUPHORIA blend that contains it.

  • The cycle and contraception

Kisspeptin acts on the axis that runs the cycle, and no trial has looked at what a weekday course does to cycle regularity or to hormonal contraception. Tell your physician which method you use, and report any change in your cycle.

  • Perimenopause and menopause

No kisspeptin study in the live research enrolled women in the transition or after it. Low desire in these years is often driven by dryness, pain, sleep and mood rather than central drive, and no desire peptide addresses dryness or pain. If the transition is the driver, it belongs in its own conversation; Pepti does not prescribe menopausal hormone therapy. See peptides for menopause and peptides for women.

  • Desire has other causes first

SSRIs and SNRIs, a new medication, sleep, pain with sex and relationship context all come before a peptide. Peptides for libido sets out what a physician looks at first.

Side effects

What is reported When What to do
Injection-site redness or soreness Any time Rotate sites between abdomen and thigh
Brief flushing, headache Early, occasionally Usually settles; report it if it does not
Occasional nausea Any time Report it
A reaction that is severe, spreading, or involves difficulty breathing Rare Call 911, then tell your physician

Across the human studies, in healthy volunteers, women with hypothalamic amenorrhea, women undergoing IVF and women and men with HSDD, kisspeptin-54 is described as well tolerated, and the FDA's review notes that acute intravenous kisspeptin-10 "has not raised any major safety concerns in studies to date." The caveat is that those studies used a different form, a different route or a single dose. The FDA's concerns about compounded kisspeptin-10 are about what is not known: an immune response to a repeatedly injected short peptide and its impurities, and the absence of repeated-dosing studies. There is no established interaction list, which is why the intake asks for every medication you take.

Where kisspeptin stands with the FDA

Kisspeptin-10 was placed in Category 2 of the FDA's interim 503A bulk drug substances list on 29 September 2023, the category for nominated substances the FDA considers to raise significant safety risks, citing immunogenicity potential with injected use, incomplete characterization of impurities, and limited subcutaneous safety data. On 29 October 2024 the advisory committee voted 0 in favor and 11 against adding it to the 503A Bulks List for secondary hypogonadism in men. It was not among the peptides moved out of Category 2 in April 2026 and remains there on the list updated 14 May 2026. Category 2 is an interim policy position, not a ban on the molecule, and no final rule has been issued. Compounded kisspeptin is not FDA approved. On the 2026 WADA Prohibited List, kisspeptin and its agonists are named under S2.2.1 as testosterone-stimulating peptides in males; women in tested sport should still check their sport's current rules.

How Pepti supplies kisspeptin

Product What is in it Typical directions Price
Kisspeptin 5 mL multi-dose vial, kisspeptin-10 2 mg/mL (10 mg per vial) 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday $229/mo
EUPHORIA 10 mg MOTS-c, 10 mg BPC-157, 50 mg GHK-Cu and 2 mg kisspeptin in 5 mL 0.25 mL (25 units) subcutaneously once daily Monday through Friday $279/mo

On the kisspeptin vial, 0.25 mL at 2 mg/mL is 0.5 mg per dose (math only), 20 doses per vial, about four weeks at Monday through Friday, which is why refills run every 28 days, one vial per fill. The two days off each week are deliberate, given the fading response seen with continuous exposure. Your physician sets your directions after reviewing your intake, and they are printed on the vial.

Every price is all-in, covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping, with no membership fee. Pepti is cash-pay and does not bill insurance. Kisspeptin-10 is a short peptide sensitive to heat and light; vials ship refrigerated with ice packs, ready to use, with sterile syringes and alcohol prep pads. Lot test results are at /quality/lab-results.

Common questions

Kisspeptin for Women, answered.

It acts on the hypothalamic neurons that release GnRH, which drives the pituitary to release LH and FSH, which in turn drive estrogen production and ovulation. In healthy women the LH response to kisspeptin-54 was greatest in the days before ovulation.
