Selank Nasal Spray: What It Is, Where to Get It Prescribed, and What It Costs
This page covers what Selank is and why the nasal route is the original one, the pathways researchers have described, what the Russian clinical trials — run with the intranasal product — do and do not establish, where it stands with the FDA, how the spray is used, and how to get it prescribed.

Treatments mentioned
Selank Nasal Spray is a prescription nasal spray supplied as 20 mL nasal spray bottle, Selank 2.5 mg/mL (50 mg per bottle). The reviewed directions are: Instill 0.20 mL (one spray into each nostril) twice daily. That is 100 doses per vial, about 20 weeks at as directed. It requires a prescription from a physician licensed in your state, is compounded by a state-licensed US pharmacy, and is not FDA approved.

Selank Nasal Spray
What Selank Nasal Spray actually is
The same seven-amino-acid peptide, delivered through the nose
Selank is a heptapeptide, seven amino acids in the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four are tuftsin, a fragment of the immunoglobulin G molecule the body produces naturally, first characterised for its effects on immune cells. The last three, Pro-Gly-Pro, were added to slow enzymatic breakdown. The spray contains exactly that molecule in a sterile solution at 2.5 mg/mL, in a metered pump bottle rather than a vial. Nothing about the peptide changes with the route; what changes is how it gets into the body.
It is not a hormone and it is not a steroid. It does not bind an androgen receptor, does not suppress anything the body produces, and is not a stimulant in the pharmacological sense.
Why the nasal route is the original one
Selank was developed in Russia at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology, and it is registered in Russia as a prescription medicine in an intranasal form. That is the formulation the Russian clinical work was built around, and the choice was deliberate: a 2008 distribution study in Bioorganic Chemistry, using tritium-labelled peptide in rats, compared intranasal, intraperitoneal, intragastric and intravenous administration and reported the intranasal route as the optimal one for delivering this peptide family to the central nervous system. So on this page, unusually for a peptide, the product in your hand uses the same route the human evidence was generated with. The injectable is the adaptation; the spray is the original.
What it is not
It is not a benzodiazepine, even though it is repeatedly compared with one. The Russian trials used medazepam and phenazepam as comparators because those are the standard anxiolytics in that system, and the published work describes Selank as acting without the sedation, memory impairment and dependence of that class. That is a description from the research, not a guarantee. It is not a decongestant or allergy spray and is not meant to do anything to the nose itself; the nose is simply the door. It is not an antidepressant, not a treatment for panic disorder, and not a substitute for psychiatric care where that is needed.
Selank Nasal Spray
How Selank is described to work
Most of the mechanistic detail below is from animal and cell studies; where a finding comes from human samples, that is stated. One mechanism is specific to the route and comes first.
Reaching the brain from the nasal cavity
Peptides are large, water-soluble molecules that cross the blood–brain barrier poorly, which is why route matters more for a brain-acting peptide than for most drugs. The nasal cavity offers a path along the olfactory and trigeminal nerves that bypasses that barrier, alongside ordinary absorption into the bloodstream. The 2008 rat distribution study is the direct evidence for Selank: labelled peptide given intranasally reached the brain more efficiently than by the other routes tested. A 2016 mouse study in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology compared intranasal and intraperitoneal Selank at the same dose and reported an anxiolytic effect by both routes, but different receptor-binding footprints in the frontal cortex — a GABA-receptor change after injection, an NMDA-receptor change after nasal dosing. One animal experiment should not be over-read, but the routes are not simply interchangeable.
Positive allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptors
The mechanism most often cited is at the GABA-A receptor, the family benzodiazepines act on. A 2018 paper in Protein and Peptide Letters used radioligand binding on isolated rat brain-cell membranes and reported that Selank altered how labelled GABA bound in the manner of a positive allosteric modulator: it did not act on the receptor directly but changed how GABA itself engaged it. Cell-membrane work, not a human finding.
Slowing the breakdown of enkephalins
The oldest proposed mechanism concerns the enkephalins, the body's short opioid peptides involved in stress and mood regulation. A 2001 paper in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine reported Selank inhibiting the enzymes that degrade leu-enkephalin in human plasma; 2002 mouse work found the anxiolytic effect and the enzyme inhibition tracking together in one strain and both absent in another. The 2008 clinical paper below measured the same marker in patients receiving the intranasal product, which makes this the one mechanism with a route-matched human correlate.
BDNF in the hippocampus, from intranasal dosing
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is the growth factor most closely tied to neuronal plasticity, and the key animal paper here used the nose. A 2008 report in Doklady Biological Sciences described intranasal Selank changing BDNF expression in the rat hippocampus in living animals, and a 2019 paper in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine reported Selank preventing an ethanol-related shift in BDNF in rats alongside better object-recognition performance. This is the work behind the "nootropic" language attached to the compound. It is animal work.
Gene expression, serotonin and immune signalling
A 2016 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology measured 84 neurotransmission genes in rat frontal cortex after Selank or GABA and reported changes in 45 of them, correlating with what GABA itself produced; a 2017 follow-up in a human neuroblastoma cell line found Selank alone changed none of those genes but altered the response to GABA. The catalog description mentions serotonin because Russian animal work has reported changes in serotonin turnover; that line is less developed. The immune side follows from tuftsin's origin: a 2008 paper in the Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry reported Selank shifting the Th1/Th2 cytokine balance in patients with anxiety-asthenic disorders over fourteen days.
Selank Nasal Spray
What the research actually shows
Anxiety in stressed animals
This is where the compound started. The 2003 paper in Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology compared Selank and ten related tuftsin-family peptides across rats and mice selected for different emotional reactivity, in a conflict-situation model of emotional stress, and reported anti-stress effects. The 2002 mouse study reported an anxiolytic effect in BALB/c mice and none in C57Bl/6 mice, and the 2016 route study found the same split with both routes. Even in animals, the response was not uniform.
The nasal route against injection, in animals
The 2008 distribution study reported intranasal delivery as the most efficient of four routes for getting the peptide into the central nervous system. The 2016 mouse study reported intranasal and intraperitoneal Selank at the same dose both reducing anxiety-like behaviour, through what looked like different receptor footprints. Neither gives a human comparison, and none exists in the published literature.
Memory, attention and immune markers
The 2019 rat work described a cognitive-stimulating effect in the object-recognition test in older animals and prevention of the memory disturbances that otherwise developed during alcohol withdrawal. Several clinical papers describe a "mild nootropic" effect on attention and verbal-fluency tests, but the animal work is where memory is measured against controls. The immune findings are cytokine changes in patient blood and cultured cells; none establishes a clinical immune benefit, and Pepti does not prescribe Selank for immune purposes.
What human data exists, and why it is route-matched here
This is the honest part, and for the nasal spray it is a better story than for the injectable. There are controlled human trials of Selank — Russian ones, small, published in Russian, compared against an active drug rather than placebo, and not described as randomised or blinded in the published abstracts — and they were conducted with the intranasal product registered in Russia.
- Zozulya and colleagues, 2008, Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry: 62 patients with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia, 30 given Selank and 32 given the benzodiazepine medazepam, on the Hamilton, Zung and CGI scales. The anxiolytic effect was reported as similar, with Selank additionally described as anti-asthenic and mildly activating. Serum leu-enkephalin half-life rose during Selank treatment.
- Medvedev and colleagues, 2014, same journal: 60 patients with anxiety-phobic and somatoform disorders (ICD-10 F40–F45), Selank against phenazepam. Reported: a pronounced anxiolytic effect, a mild nootropic effect, an effect persisting about a week after the last dose, and better quality-of-life scores.
- Medvedev and colleagues, 2015, same journal: 70 patients with anxiety-spectrum disorders, phenazepam alone (30) against phenazepam plus Selank (40), on HDRS, CGI, Spielberger, the UKU side-effect scale, Stroop and verbal-fluency tests and the SF-36. The combination was reported to bring the benzodiazepine's effect on earlier and to reduce its side effects — attention and memory impairment, sedation, longer sleep, sexual disturbance.
- Uchakina and colleagues, 2008: the fourteen-day immune-marker study described above.
"Route-matched" means this: the Russian product these patients received is an intranasal solution, so the spray on this page is the same peptide by the same route and the findings apply without a translation step. The concentration and the pump are the US pharmacy's, not the Russian manufacturer's, so the match is in route, not in the exact product. The injectable, by contrast, has never been the subject of a published human trial.
The limitations sit alongside the findings. The trials are small, 60 to 70 patients. They compare Selank with an active benzodiazepine rather than placebo, so they show "similar to medazepam" rather than "better than nothing." Blinding is not described. The outcomes are clinician-rated scales. All of the trials come from the developing institutions and their partners, and none has been replicated outside Russia; a 2021 review in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology characterised Selank as poorly studied outside its country of origin, which is fair. Comparator-controlled trials on validated anxiety scales, in the route you would actually use, are still a stronger base than the animal-only case behind most peptides. But the honest framing is "reported in small Russian comparator trials by this route," not "proven."
What the evidence does not establish
- It does not establish an effect size against placebo. No placebo-controlled trial exists in the PubMed-indexed literature.
- It does not establish efficacy for any diagnosis in the way a regulator would recognise. It is not FDA approved for anything.
- It does not establish that this concentration and spray volume reproduce the Russian dosing, or how much of a nasal dose reaches the brain in humans. The distribution data is from rats.
- It does not establish long-term safety over years of continuous use, or anything about combining Selank with SSRIs, SNRIs or other psychiatric medication.
Selank Nasal Spray
Where Selank Nasal Spray stands with the FDA right now
This one has a different history from the peptides that made the news in 2026. The record is about the substance and applies to the spray and the injectable alike.
Selank acetate, listed by the FDA as "Selank acetate (TP-7)," was placed in Category 2 of the 503A bulk drug substances list on 29 September 2023 — the category for nominated substances with identified safety concerns. The concern recorded was the generic one applied to almost every peptide in that batch: potential immunogenicity "for certain routes of administration" from aggregation and impurities, with no human exposure data reviewed. On 27 September 2024 the FDA removed Selank acetate from Category 2, for a reason unique to it: the agency had "received additional information from the nominator indicating that they intended to nominate a different bulk drug substance." The nomination was withdrawn as a mistake rather than resolved on the science, a year and a half before the twelve-peptide removal of April 2026.
Today the FDA's safety-risks page, current as of 22 April 2026, lists Selank acetate under "bulk drug substances nominated but withdrawn," and the 503A categories document updated 14 May 2026 does not carry it in Category 1, 2 or 3. It was not on the agenda of the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting of 23–24 July 2026, where its sibling Semax was recommended for the 503A Bulks List by 8 votes to 5 with one abstention.
So the accurate description today is: not flagged as a significant safety risk since September 2024, never evaluated by the advisory committee, and with no active nomination on the 503A list. It is prescribed and dispensed by state-licensed pharmacies pursuant to a prescription; the spray is currently prepared by a pharmacy licensed in 23 states, which is why availability here is narrower than for the injectable. It is not an FDA-approved drug product, and compounded medications never are. See are peptides FDA approved.
Selank Nasal Spray
Realistic expectations
These are patterns described by prescribers, not trial endpoints. The Russian trials report group averages on clinician-rated scales over a few weeks by this route, not what an individual will feel on a given day. A physician decides whether treatment is appropriate at all.
The first few days
Prescribers commonly describe any change as subtle: a sense of being less reactive to stress rather than any noticeable effect at the time of the spray. The 2008 trial described the peptide as mildly activating rather than sedating, and some people report exactly that — slightly more alert, not calmer in the way a sedative feels. There is no "kick." Noticing nothing in the first week is normal.
Weeks one to four
This is the window the Russian trials worked in, and where prescribers describe the clearest change if it occurs: lower baseline anxiety, easier concentration under pressure, and in some people better sleep onset as a downstream effect.
Beyond the first month
The 2014 trial reported the anxiolytic effect persisting about a week after the last dose, which is one reason prescribers are relaxed about a missed day. Whether to continue past the first month is a conversation with your physician based on what changed, not a default. The bottle holds more doses than a month needs, so running out is not the trigger for that conversation.
After the course
No withdrawal syndrome and no rebound anxiety are described in the published trials, in contrast to the benzodiazepine comparators. That is a reported finding from small studies, not a guarantee, and it is worth telling your physician if anything shifts when you stop.
Selank Nasal Spray
When something else makes more sense
A reference that only ever recommends its own product is not much of a reference. Some honest cases where the spray is not the first thing to reach for:
- A psychiatric diagnosis under active treatment. If you are on an SSRI, SNRI, benzodiazepine or antipsychotic, or have been diagnosed with panic disorder, bipolar disorder or major depression, that treatment comes first and Selank is at most an adjunct your prescriber may or may not agree to.
- Your state is not one of the 23, or you want a precisely measured dose. The injectable Selank is the same peptide, available in all 50 states and DC, and delivers a known volume rather than depending on nasal absorption.
- The main complaint is focus rather than anxiety. Semax Nasal Spray is the sibling peptide from the same Russian programme by the same route, described around BDNF and attention rather than GABA and calm. Where both matter and injection is acceptable, Semax + Selank puts them in one vial.
- The problem is sleep first. DSIP is aimed at sleep directly; the SERENITY blend combines DSIP with Selank for people whose stress and sleep are the same problem.
- Cognition alongside metabolic or recovery support. The SYNAPSE blend pairs Semax and Selank with MOTS-c and tesamorelin; the ELEVATE blend pairs them with BPC-157 and KPV.
- Chronic nasal problems. Chronic rhinitis, recurrent sinusitis or a deviated septum make absorption less predictable; raise them at intake.
Your physician will tell you if Selank is not the right tool for what you have described. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription, and being declined is refunded.
Selank Nasal Spray
Dosing, and how a bottle is actually used
One spray in each nostril
The reviewed directions are 0.20 mL per dose, given as one spray into each nostril, twice daily. There is no syringe and no units to read: the metered pump delivers the volume. Your physician sets your own directions and they are printed on the bottle.
How to use a nasal spray well
Absorption is only as good as the spray's contact with the nasal lining, so technique matters more than with an injection. Blow your nose gently first if congested. Keep your head level rather than tilted back — tilting back sends the liquid down the throat, where it is swallowed and largely wasted. Aim the nozzle slightly outward, away from the septum, and breathe in gently rather than sniffing hard. Prime the pump before first use as the pharmacy's insert describes, and wipe the nozzle after each use.
How long a bottle lasts
The bottle contains 100 doses at the reviewed volume, more than a single 28-day cycle needs. In practice the beyond-use date on the label, not the volume remaining, governs when the bottle is replaced: a compounded sterile solution has a dated shelf life once dispensed. Refills run on the schedule your physician sets. One bottle per fill, always — not a stockpile.
Storage
Refrigerated, and it ships that way in insulated packaging with ice packs. Keep it upright, out of light, and do not freeze it. Beyond-use dating is on the label.
Selank Nasal Spray
Safety and side effects
Selank is described as well tolerated in the Russian trials, a stronger statement than for most peptides because the trials used a formal side-effect scale (UKU), a benzodiazepine comparator and this route. The finding reported most consistently is what was absent: no sedation, no memory impairment, no dependence signal and no withdrawal over the study periods.
What the nasal route adds and removes
The spray removes injection-site reactions entirely. What it adds is local: a mild sting on spraying, transient nasal irritation or dryness, a runny nose, sneezing, an unusual taste if some drains to the throat, and occasionally a mild headache — usually described as brief and settling. A nosebleed, persistent nasal pain or crusting is a reason to stop and tell your physician. Some people describe fatigue or a flat feeling in the first days, and a few the opposite, a sense of being wired; both are usually described as settling.
There is no established interaction list, because the trials that would produce one have not been run. The one combination studied is with a benzodiazepine, under supervision. Nobody has studied Selank alongside SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants or antipsychotics, which is why the intake asks for every medication you take and a physician reviews it rather than a form. Other nasal sprays — steroid, decongestant or saline — belong on that list too, because they change the lining the peptide is absorbed across.
Stop and contact your physician for any reaction that is severe, spreading, involves difficulty breathing, or involves a marked change in mood.

How Selank Nasal Spray compares
Nasal spray vs injectable Selank
Same peptide, two routes. The spray is the route the Russian product is registered in and the Russian trials used, and the animal distribution work reports it as the most efficient route to the brain. The injectable delivers a measured subcutaneous dose without depending on nasal absorption, is available in all 50 states and DC rather than 23, and carries the injection-site effects the spray does not. The two have not been compared in a published human trial. The spray has the route-matched human evidence; the injection has the dosing certainty and the wider availability. Which is prescribed is a physician's decision.
Selank Nasal Spray vs Semax Nasal Spray
Same Russian programme, same route, related design — Semax is a fragment of ACTH with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail, Selank a fragment of tuftsin with the same tail — and different targets. Semax Nasal Spray is described around BDNF, attention and neuroprotection; Selank around GABA modulation, enkephalins and anxiety. Prescribers tend to reach for Semax when the complaint is focus, Selank when it is stress, and the two are frequently prescribed together. Semax was recommended for the 503A Bulks List in July 2026; Selank has not been reviewed.
Selank Nasal Spray vs Semax + Selank and the blends
The bottle on this page contains 50 mg of Selank and nothing else. Semax + Selank is an injectable carrying both peptides in one vial, with 5 mg of Selank per vial, as do the SERENITY, SYNAPSE and ELEVATE blends. A blend makes sense when several of its components are indicated and injection is acceptable; the single spray makes sense when anxiety is the one thing being treated, when a physician wants to see what Selank alone does first, or when the nasal route is the point.

Selank Nasal Spray is a nasal spray.
Not routinely, though your physician may want labs depending on your history. at-home blood testing covers hormone, metabolic and thyroid markers without a lab visit.
It is legal to prescribe and dispense in the United States with a valid prescription. It is not FDA approved: compounded medications are prepared by licensed pharmacies pursuant to a prescription rather than approved as manufactured products. See are peptides FDA approved.
Pricing is published on the Selank Nasal Spray page as one all-in figure covering medication, physician review, refill management and shipping. What drives peptide pricing generally is in how much do peptides cost.
The same peptide by a different route. The spray is the form Selank is registered in Russia and the form the Russian trials used; the injectable delivers a measured subcutaneous dose and is available in all 50 states and DC rather than 23. They have not been compared in a published human trial. Which one is prescribed is your physician's decision.
No. Selank acetate was placed in Category 2 of the FDA's 503A bulk substances list on 29 September 2023, and the FDA removed it on 27 September 2024 after the nominator said it had intended to nominate a different substance. It now appears on the FDA's list only as "nominated but withdrawn," was not part of the April 2026 removals, and has not been reviewed by the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee. It remains legal to prescribe and dispense, as a spray or an injection.
Yes, and it is Russian and route-matched. Small comparator-controlled trials published in the Korsakov Journal of Neurology and Psychiatry between 2008 and 2015 — 60 to 70 patients each, with generalised anxiety disorder, neurasthenia or anxiety-phobic and somatoform disorders — used the intranasal Russian product and reported anxiolytic effects similar to the benzodiazepines medazepam and phenazepam, without the sedation and memory effects of those drugs. None was placebo-controlled, none is described as randomised or blinded, and none has been replicated outside Russia.
There is no trial-established timeline for an individual. The Russian trials measured change on anxiety scales over a few weeks by this route, and prescribers generally describe a subtle lowering of stress reactivity in the first one to two weeks with the clearest change over the first month. There is no immediate effect at the time of the spray.
No. It is a peptide, not a benzodiazepine, though cell-membrane research describes it modulating the same GABA-A receptor family. The Russian trials compared it directly with benzodiazepines and reported anxiolytic effects without the sedation, memory impairment or dependence signal of that class. That is a reported finding from small trials, not a promise.
They are frequently prescribed together, and Semax Nasal Spray is available by the same route. Whether the pair is appropriate for you is your physician's decision; existing psychiatric medication is raised at intake because Selank has not been studied alongside SSRIs, SNRIs, stimulants or antipsychotics.
Mostly local and brief: a mild sting on spraying, nasal dryness or irritation, a runny nose, sneezing, an unusual taste if some drains to the throat, and occasionally a mild headache. There are no injection-site reactions. The Russian trials, which used a formal side-effect scale, reported no sedation, memory impairment, dependence or withdrawal. A nosebleed or persistent nasal pain is a reason to stop and tell your physician.
